How'd they break?  Coils just burn out?  And I think Andreas said he was somewhere.

Martin I think I could make enough voltage, I slapped a ridiculous amount of voltage out of a coil before, 6" of ionizing spark should be enough to get through the insulation, I cought a zap from it too one time, damn! left a pinhole burn, and I'm sure I could make even more voltage if needed, run 2 ignition coils even, step it up twice from a capacitor discharge of about 300v, I love HV.. lol my buddy's dad does neon signs, has an old transformer from an electric chair, uses it to draw the gas through the tubing, that thing is nutty, standing it the same room while he arced it to the table about 2 feet away made my hair stand on end... mmm.. HV

damn those are some big ass wires.. I like HV, but low current, I'm not a fan of heart fibrillation, 500kcmil, now I'm not entirely sure how that measurement works, well I know kinda how it works but it's like asking me how many kilos I weigh.... it's cross sectional area right?, a cmil is 0.001inch I know that (trying to put this is terms I understand) so 500kcmil, is something like this maybe? 0.001x1000x500=500, 500"area ??? which would have a diameter of 500=3.14r^2 solved for r is around 12.5inch thick cables! that seems ridiculous! hah.. maybe I am miscalculating...

curious, what is your job title?

You got it sorta right, Kcmil is a measure of area in circular mils. 1 cmil represents the area of a circle that has a diameter is 1/1000 inch. A 500 kcm cable has an area that is equivalent to 500,000 circles, each one having a diameter of 1/1000 inch, the actual copper core of the wire I have found can vary in diameter by manufactures specs and all the cable companys seem to have different rulers. heh.

But overall look for around 1.235" diam or so ;)

nice, I'm getting into a career involving electricity aswell, more electronics... biomedical engineering... I'll be on the mainland after the summer going to bcit... I figure instead of just taking electrical engineering I might aswell take something to do with electronics in a more specific field that will never die in demand... people always gonna get sick...

I'm just a struggling EE student.  Really struggling.  Next semester I think I am going to stop sleeping through tests and not handing in assignments.  All I've learned so far is if you lick your fingers and touch a wire and it hurts, it's high.  If nothing, it's low.  It's all boring stuff. 5V mostly.  :x

500Kcmil..... I've done a little work with 4 gauge wire myself.

Jessa you should geta tesla coil for your room:
