RON SEXSMITH
With special guest SARAH SLEAN

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND

868 GRANVILLE STREET

DOORS 8:00 pm               SHOW 9:00 pm

The earnest work of Canadian singer/songwriter Ron Sexsmith won acclaim not from only critics but from fellow performers like Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, and John Hiatt — some of the same artists who initially inspired Sexsmith to become a musician. Born in 1964 and raised in the Niagara Falls area, he started his first band at the age of 14, and within a few years earned his first regular gig at an area club. Influenced by Pete Seeger, he began making the rounds on the folk circuit, but soon decided to focus his attentions on becoming a songwriter.

While Ron Sexsmith has had little problem establishing his identity as a songwriter with the warm, compassionate intelligence of his lyrics, as a recording artist he's been a bit harder to pin down. While some music critics commented that Sexsmith sounded slightly awkward and self-conscious as a singer on his early albums, he's grown into a vocalist who delivers his material with a genuine and compelling commitment on his recent albums, and Retriever sounds like his most confident and accomplished album to date. And as a writer, Sexsmith is still gloriously one of a kind; a man who can write about love without sounding either cloying or bitter, and can document both the bright and dark sides of life with honesty, heart, and clear perception.

Sarah Slean first appeared on the Toronto live circuit in 1997; the release of her independent debut EP Universe followed soon afterward which helped her develop an intense fan base on an international level. Already an accomplished, classically trained pianist, the Pickering, Ontario, native pursued her studies in the music program at the University of Toronto while gradually carving out a name for herself as a charismatic, ebullient live performer. When coupled with her wistful delivery, Slean's contemplative, piano-led pop drew immediate (and well-founded) comparisons to the work of artists like Tori Amos and, to a lesser extent, Sarah McLachlan.

Don’t miss Ron Sexsmith and Sarah Slean when they perform live at the Commodore Ballroom on Tuesday, November 2nd.
