o2 housing
« on: October 10, 2004, 04:02:14 pm »
I'm planning on making my own exhaust system and figure I might aswell do something about the o2 ensor while I'm going through all of this.  I realize dumped o2s help somewhat with boost creep and high end flow, but how loud are they? I've never heard one in person, and you can never get good perspective from sound clips on the comp..  has anyone ever tried using a little silencer from a 125cc dirtbike or anything? advice/experience appreciated, thanks...

I had an o2 dump on my last Talon, I liked it quite a bit.  Depending on how you route the pipe, you can dampen the noise quite a bit.  If you like to be loud, just use a short pipe. 8)

no I don't want it to be too loud, I'd rather hear my turbo spooling than my exhaust... but I'm not exactly sure how loud it would be, I have no idea, when the wastegate opens does it sound like all hell breaking loose or what?

Jesse if ur goin for a 3" turbo back and u don't want creep u really should port your turbo and o2 sensor housing i've done it for a few island guys with creep issues and after it kept it to 15psi (were as it would be 20+ by 4500 rpm before)

i have a die grinder and can do the porting for u if u like
Had a DSM...........sold it............ never been happier

dumped o2's are crazy loud no matter how you rig it up, if you dont want it to be loud, dont get one.  There are other ways of gettin rid of potential creep.  Do what wade said, and/or get a flapper rigged up.

If you want quiet and want creep controlled, a well made tubular O2 should do the trick.

thanks for all the replies, I'm gonna have to hear one to make a decision, I just can't imagine the sound, when I'm givin'er I don't wanna attract too much attention, unless the noise has some class to it, then that plus the minor performance gains would be worth it, and Wade I'd definitly take you up on the porting offer, that'd be sweet - edit, just read Trevor's post about dumping his o2 and missing his turbo sound.. decision made.  I'd way rather listen to turbo  :)

Mine is rarely heard.

My Actuator begins to let the flap open at about 18psi then holds steady at 20psi.

When I rip around town and such, I rarely reach 20PSI, and if I do, it is just for a quick second or two.

You only hear the Dump when you are at max boost and the wastegate opens.

Mine is not too loud, I have a flex pipe leading straight down to just below the FMIC.  I actually like the way it sounds.

If you run 5PSI however, it might drive you mental really quick

I had an external dump on my talon breathing through a hks wastegate and custom O2 its pretty loud and it not the prettiest of sounds but cmon man POWER AINT SUPPOSED TO BE PRETTY. Anyways if i didnt want to hear mine i just set my boost controller higher than i intended to boost( easy with a dual electronic). but if you dont want tthe noise just feed it back into the turbo you shouldnt have any problems with creep if you got a half decent wastegate and proted or custom O2 housing make good power cause the stockers like shoving a sock down youre throat.

not wierd, it'd be a redundant waste of time to even have a wastegate..
