RIMS & BRAKE ROTORS - need info
« on: October 07, 2004, 08:39:46 am »
im thinking making my car look good, since theres no use in enhancing it performance-wise, so im looking at rims.

my brake rotor is making awful groaning sounds and vibrations. in case its the prob, i might as well upgrade.

RIMS
i need YOUR thoughts on best rims for my car (1G FWD NT A/T) on
1.rim size
2. how size affects ride
3. tires for it (bigger rims = more expensive tires?)
4. suspension assy (i have stock - needs changing?)
5. etc (everything else i missed, like $$$ )

BRAKE ROTORS
1. slotted/cross-drilled (im leaning on slotted coz of cracks on drilled)
2. $$$?

need all ur infos, tnx

Want bigger rotors?

I will have for sale a front pair of AEM 12.5" big rotors :)  You can adapt them to fit on a 1G.

for brakes id suggest the 93+ awd big brakes..... i had them on my n/t and it made the braking feel solid!
for rims.... dont go bigger than 17's if you want to accelerate....... i had 18's on my car for a while and my 60 times went up by about .2 seconds on average..... this was mainly because of the low profile(225/40(i think...or 45..)/18)
the car handled like it was on rails with them tho....this is comparing to 16's with some nice z rated tires and 205/55/16 tire. if your lookin to save money as well then i woouldnt go bigger than 17... 18's are expensive for rubber....
so.... in conclusion 18's if you want to handle and not accelerate, and awd big brakes!
good luck
1 laser rs....sold
the only way it was doin 12's in a quarter mile was being dropped off a 1320 foot  cliff
.....stupid university costing so much

hey dont pick on my car colour   , attracts a lot of attn hehehe.

hmm.. 17's sounds good.. what price range are we lookin at if i buy a whole set? where do i get them?

big slotted rotors sounds good but i have no time for modifying it.. mebbe ill just go with regular-sized slotted rotors for 1Gs

eh Steve, get yourself some stock 17" GST rims like I did today. They look gooood :D

Bad picture, but you get the point hehe

I actually needed new tires badly (I was running on 20% treads), so I found tires that happened to have some nice looking rims in them. On another note, I just put them on today with my trusty tire iron and car jack, do I need to get these things rebalanced or anything? Also, what kinda tire pressure should I put in them? Same as the sticker on the door or different now that the wheels have changed?

The balancing should be okay, but you're gunna need an alignment.

Actually you don't need an alignment if you just change the rims and tires providing it was good before.  It was recommended because you don't want to ruin your new tires due to bad alignment.
Alignment is only needed if it's out or the ride height is changed.

you won't need to change any alignment settings with different wheels and tires IF it didn't need to be changed before.
