Car is smoking
« on: October 03, 2004, 02:27:37 pm »
just got home from starbucks and was just getting out of the car when i noticed some smoke. My car is smoking out the tailpipe at idle  :(  Just drove it down to starbucks, had the turbo timer running, wasnt smoking there, went to the bank and came back home. Smells like oil, i pulled off the turbo outlet pipe near the intercooler, just to check for oil ( lookin for a blown turbo seal ) nothing there, i'll pull the one off the jpipe later and see if anything is there. Does this sound like valve seals?

Paul, get someone to go behind you to see when it happens.  Or if you want to, lets meet up and we'll get to the bottom of this.  If it happens when you leave it idle for a while, then step on it, that's valve stem seals.  I'm sure you know the symptoms of blown rings.

Is it only at idle that it blows blue?

Having just had my valve stems replaced I can tell you what happens when they go  :P   Your car will smoke...and smoke bad.  Not when you drive but when you let the car sit and idle...say at a stoplight.  When you pull away poof.  Lowell fixed it nicely though and its all good now

Just got back from the mall and i didnt get any smoke at all, but when i drove away earlier it smoked a bit, its really not that bad. I'll let it sit idling and see what happens. I gotta goto work now though so i'll try tomorrow. Its pretty light, first time i noticed it was at idle, then as i took off it smoked a bit down the street then stopped.

Which Sbux did you go to, Paul?  Kensington or Carleton?  THe distance you drive might have something to do with it.

If it smokes when you first start the car but then goes away, it's valve seals.

If it smokes all the time, and it's white, it's head gasket

if it smokes all the time, and it's blue, it's piston rings.

Good luck man, all those problems suck major ass.

Paul, when you replaced your battery that day I saw you, did you reload all the old link settings? If any of you have ever played with your fuel at idle you can make you car smoke and spit water like a tap by leaning the piss out of everything.

That would be grey smoke mind you, so if its blue you are SOL :)

Check PCV system, make sure the valve is operational.

Check the IC for oil, if oil is found clean with gasoline or some other oil solvent.

Do a compression test.
If Valve seals are leaking the compression will be ok, but it still will smoke.

Keep in mind the turbo could be leaking out the turbine side which wouldn't leave any oil in the intake but would smoke blue out the exhaust.

Graeme, kensington one, just a few blocks away. Definatly valve seals, it smokes at idle a bit, or when i stop at a light and start to go i get a small puff of blue. Checked the IC b4 i left for work, it was clean. PCV is few weeks old. Guess im gonna have to do a 1g head swap with some meron cams or some HKS's if i can find em  :D

Well if i gotta pull the head anyways..........might as well just do it. Havent seen any smoke today, wont hurt anything having a little leaky valve seal will it? Cant fix it right away.
