Tranny Broken? --- Nope it's the T-belt --- Rebuild Time
« on: July 19, 2004, 08:30:45 pm »
My car has let me down again

I was going along the highway at 80kph and there was a clunk from the tranny and suddendly I was coasting in fifth. I gave it gas and no acceleration. I tried third gear and the engine stalled. I rolled into a parking lot and tried to start it and the starter spins but witout turning the engine. Fooling around with it a bit more I foud that it will roll in neutral and the clutch will keep it from rolling when in gear. I had no tools with me so I couln't find out any more but there were no obvious problems like flud leaks. I just got a ride home (40km away)
The car will now need to sit there until Wednesday when I can have time to get it towed somwhere.

I think the tranny is screwed but am not sure. Anybody know?

Question number two is: The tow wiill cost at least $150 to get it here, around how much shop time would this take to fix? Do you think it's worth it to get it towed to a shop nearer where it is?

There is a CT right accross the street but I don't trust those guys too much

Tow it to your driveway and fix it yourself, i could come up and help if need be, and if you knew what the problem was.

But if your on a time thing, then best to have someone else fix it, cause it will prob take awhile if you do it yourself, just cause it seems to go that way sometimes.

I wouldn't trust CT.

Hey Jeremy, I know some guys who tow for cheap. They just have a regular tow truck though. If you'd like their phone number you can shoot me a pm. :D

Thanks for the info on those tow guys Kevin....They didn't answer the phone but I got a cheap tow from Last Call Towing $85 from Duncan to Nanaimo.

SO, long story short my T-belt is broken
Not sure yet what the extent of the damage is.

So my stepdad thinks I should put a new belt on to do a compression test and determine what's bent. I think this is pointless. Since the belt went while doing 80kph I can pretty much guarantee that valves are bent. I want to just start ripping into the head.

What do you think?

Bad news for sure.  I had the exact same thing happen a few years back (3 months after I bought the car).  Fairly silently while driving down the highway, bent 14 valves, seized the camshafts and chewed off the teeth on the belt around crank.

With that much momentum I would think you'd at a minimum have bent a couple.

Ds-map / Jackal, highly recommended.  I've been running it for the last 3 - 4 years.  Amazing improvement in throttle response and overall power under part throttle conditions, and that was with the old maf still in place for 2 years.  Amazing tuning platform in my opinion, and best of all free.

Just pull the head and fix it, otherwise you get to do all the work twice to find out what you already know...

Especially if you were cranking the motor after it broke.

The car now has 210K So I'm thinking of just doing full rebuild while I'm in there

Ask not what the damage is (valves), but ask why the T-belt has broken in the first place.    I'd find the answer to this question before slapping the rebuilt head back on.

I had a bad exhaust leak the other week. It fried my alt and melted the belt cover a bit. I checked out the belt thoroughly when I fixed it but I guess it was too late. I will look for other causes though since the belt totally shredded.
