Backfire, Puffs Of Smoke.
« on: April 25, 2004, 05:35:40 pm »
okay so Its happened a few times But Im just wondering, When I get on it, I feel a slight hesitation and then a puff of smoke explodes out of my exhaust.
Yester I was in 4th and I dropped it to 3rd and punched it. at about 6200 rpm's I feel a hesitaion and clay says I shot a cloud of black smoke outta my exhaust.
Last time I shot a fireball.
So whats going on? Am I running too rich and getting crazy backfire?
Or am I running too much boost?
specs are big16, FMIC, BOV (vented), all stock fuel management except for B&M FPR.

rev limiter is at 7500 though... it happens when you're right on the gas?

rev limter spews black smoke because it's spark cut though isn't it so it would be running rich.  black smoke = rich.  On my celica high speeds runs were sweet because I had a tornado of black smoke coming out of the exhaust.  That was back in the carbed days though.

Like John says try recirculating the BOV.  I know when I was venting mine I would be rich between shifts and this would cause puffs of black smoke.

Maybe running too rich up top, hence the hesitation at 6500 RPM.
all go, no show!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

John, I cant recirc the BOV cause the blitz BOV isnt meant to be recirculated. Maybe somebody could lend me there bov and I could try it on.

I dont think Its the rev limiter cause I was around 6000-6500 when it happened. nowhere near the redzone.

Oh and I forgot to mention, Im running 15 psi of boost.

Whats this about caps???

And Chris what about those groundstraps? could not being grounded properly erally be a cause?

The thing is I used to be able to get on it before and this would never happen. Just started happening about a month ago. actually when I installed the B&M FPR (remember that post)

Did you ever set your base fuel pressure properly after you put it in?

Yeah. When I installed the B&M FPR, the screw was pretty much all the way out, in otherwords, stock. 38-39psi fuel pressure. when i rev the engine, its goes up to 43-44 psi.

You mean just raise the rpms it goes up still under vacuum?  Because it should stay a constant base until you have positive boost pressure.  Then at 15psi you should be base + 15psi fuel pressure.  To check it though you should watch a pressure gauge while your driving.  Tape it to the windshield or something don't run a gas line of any kind inside the car.  I don't know I've never used one of those but have heard that even with the screw all the way out some people say that their pressure is higher than stock.  I think you're running a higher pressure than you think you are with this regulator which means rich since you're not correcting with an kind of fuel management.   You may need some.

Martin, actually that sounds about right.  Mine does the same.  You also have to consider that when you floor it, it will have to compensate for the change in air coming in, so more pressure is a reasonable way of doing it
