Why have an O2 housing at all?
« on: April 23, 2004, 08:25:25 am »
Just surfing for tubular O2 housings then it hit me.

Maybe a dumb question but why do we need an O2 housing?

Couldn't a downpipe be made to go directly to the turbo?
Then toss an O2 bung on the bend near the turbo and dump or recirc the wastegate.
Wouldn't this give better flow since you remove the whole flange/gasket step from O2 to DP?

Yes, which is why they have O2 eliminator downpipes.  Why did the factory do it?  It's easier/cheaper to cast a piece with the tight bends and funky flanges than to fab an entire downpipe that will bolt directly on to the turbo outlet.
