T-Tops anyone?
« on: March 16, 2004, 05:49:48 pm »
I rarely link to another forum, but I love how this looks.  Too bad you gotta sacrifice the rear seat... but this proves it can be done and looks bad-ass!

Well, I thot Targa Top = T-Top ... I know what you mean with the centre piece still in place, I thot it was another type of t-top.

A lil confusing ... T-Top's and Targa Tops ... *shrug*

What about cars that have the felt/velvet/cloth tops, what are those called?

Either way, the TARGA Top is wicked - I think it'd look better on a 1G than a 2G (2G's are way more "rounded", don't suite the targa top as well as, I think) but still very original.  I'd say it'd suck to lose your back seat ... but really, who really uses their back seat? I'd like to pull it out and put a nice custom fibreglass/mdf enclosure for some subs anyways ;)

dont T-tops have that big bar in the middle, and targa tops dont?

like Camaro's have T-tops but Supras have Targa tops?

and I thought about doing that before to my car, but someone told me that the frame would eventually cave in because it wasnt made to handle a targa top..... hmm... looks sweet though!

Pretty sure t-tops and targa tops are two different things.
And your frame won't cave in if you've got a full roll cage inside. Do it Robin!

T tops have 2 removeable pieces with the bar in the middle, my buddy's mr2 is like this, and targa is the whole top.. like my other buddy's supra...about the fram bending.. I'm pretty sure that's why he took out the back seats... to put in all that steel...

I've always understood that T tops are two piece tops where a center piece runs down the middle, ie: C3 vettes, Firebirds, Camaros, MR2s, Pulsars etc etc.

Targa tops are where there's 1 removeable piece leaving no frame member in the roof.  Ala C5 vette, Mk IV Supra, Porsche 911s etc

Our cars are unibody and the top is a structural member that ads gobs of stiffness to our cars, when you remove it you'd have to add adequate bracing.  Wonder why?  Open both your doors, back up and take a look at the car from the side, now pretend the top isn't there.... There ain't much left...

All that said it looks badass and it'd be so sweet to be able to pull the whole top off.  Mind you, they almost always leak... and squeek...

I've heard rumours and seen ads picturing a 1G targa top, the rumours say it was european market only.  If you could hook up with a real factory targa top 1G you'd be my hero, especially if you sold it to me   8)
