HELP! Did my timing belt jump some teeth??
« on: January 30, 2004, 09:30:12 am »
Please help me!
My 1995 GST all of a sudden started to drive like crap after i went over a speed bump.
It won't go over 2000RPM while in gear, but i can rev it, but sounds really bad,and it has a really bad idle, under 1000PRM, no matter how much I turn the BISS screw, and is seems like it was running on 3 cyc. The idle was really rough.

So i change the wires, reset the ECU... NOTHING,
I took out the plugs, they were BLACK!
changed the plugs, and NOTHING!
I did a compression test and got 200PSI

I lined up my timing marks yesterday and found that the crank was at the BTDC mark (10 derees)!!!
Should it be there??? or be at 0 degrees?

So did I jump some teeth?

please help!

Sounds bad Jerry. I would not run it again until you check out the timing marks. Let me know if you need anything.

check for other things too, like a cracked battery, or maybe a loose maf, or other sensor plug?

I would check for a really big intake leak. If your BOV tube came off, you'd be venting to atmoshere, running pig rich (black plugs) and would not idle.

I cant see going over a speed bump being able to screw up the t-belt that bad!

Also, if it was running that poorly because of a skipped belt (would have had to skip a bit) I would think that you would have valve piston impact.

Good luck Jerry.

He has had his Bov vented since he's had the car and hasn't seemed to have any problems with it.

I think it means you're doing a t-belt job in your near future unfortunately. Did you line up all the marks? (ie, did you take off the lower cover too?)
I am working tomorrow but if you are going to be around maybe I can come by on my lunch and look, since you're so close. I can get a timing light if you want one. You might be lucky and not have any bent valves. I had my belt jump due to a bad auto-tensioner and got lucky with no bending. I'll PM you my number again. I think you need to get the bottom cover off to be sure of the problem though.

Well, the timing did jump! It was off by about 4 teeth. I put it all back together, It idles fine, but i think the damage is already done, cause I notice lots of smoke from the exhaust. I also noticed some oil, in the front of my block, under the head! So i think I blew my head gasket! damn it!

But the good news was it only took me 1 hour to change a timing belt, lol :D

I haven't driven the car yet, it just idles and revs better than it did a few days ago

thanks for all the help guys!

Ouch. Sorry to hear about that. It jumped after going over a speedbump? I'm surprised thats all it took, thats why I thought intake leak.

Ill have to watch out for speedbumps now!

Assuming you guys aren't joking.... consider that that rally cars fly over jumps at warp speed.  I doubt going over a speed bump had anything to do with a skipped timing belt.  More likely it wasn't tensioned properly.

Hey Lowell,

It wasn't tensioned prpoerly!! I didn't change the usto tensioner the last time i did my timing belt (4 years ago, but my car has been sitting for 3.5 years). I know its my fault, I even knew the belt was loose....
