Change your tranny oil to redline mt90/mtl mix - this helps alot of grinding issues, but 2nd gear seems to be a common crunchy gear.

If you are doing alot of mods go for a ACT 2600/Street kit, if not doing much look at the 2100.

This is from lots of reading and reviews, not personal experience - my ACT2600 is still sitting by my bed....waiting for my Fidanza...

its probably your 2nd gear synchro.... its common in these trannys..... you can get a stronger 2nd gear synchro from an evo tranny... lowell has them in stock....

In the event that i have to get a new clutch is there anything that i should replace while the tranny is out or improvment that are not too costly.

Seals, tranny bearings, maybe a replacement flywheel instead of resurfacing the old one, pressure plate, if you were only planning on changing the disc..

Seals and bearings on the tranny requires a whole tear down... not really worth it unless you rebuild the whole unit.  At that point you better do synchros, any worn gears, shift forks, etc or you'll be paying for the labour again in 30k kms or so.

No, brand new trannys cost quite a bit., though it would be nice (Shep-spec)  :)
However there are times that a replacement used one may be a better solution. The problem there is that it is like buying an egg. It may look fine on the outside but be rotten on the inside.

if I was in the market for a tranny, I'd buy a used one to put in immediately and then keep my crappy one. Then over the next year or so, I'd beef it up in my garage with double synchros, etc.
I like projects that you can take your time on :)

That beats some other problems, haha.  In my Camaro once in a while vibrations would loosen the bolts that hold the shift linkage onto the tranny and it'd all come loose.  I got stuck in 2nd gear a few times.  Good times
