How much belt play for p/s & alternator drivebelts?

How much play do you guys leave for the p/s belt and the alternator belt (2.0L turbo)? I left just over a 1/4" play and I didn't hear any squeeling, but I'm more worried about overtightening them and busting my new alternator... My search as led to conflicting answers. TIA

no squeel = no problems :D. if it ain't broke don't fix it. but since i've done about 6 of these on Talons i think 2 cm is about right

2cm?  That's almost an inch... alot less tension than I usually use... I dunno, like you said though, if it doesn't squeel than who cares...

1/4 Inch thats about right.  

Anywhere from that to 3/8' sometimes if your worryed it lust letter a little loose.

"the official mesurement from the manual"

(2) Measure the deflection with a force of 100 N (22 Ibs.)
applied to belt mid-point between water pump pulley -
and alternator pulley. If the standard value is not
obtained, make adjustment.
Standard value:
<1.8L Engine> 8.0-11.0 mm (.315-A33 in.)
<2.0L DOHC Engine>
9.0-11.5 mm (.354-.453 in.)

What about when it squeels when it's cold?  It starts squeeling when I use the A/C when it's cold.  After the car warms up squeel goes away..so I try to avoid using the A/C when it's cold..
