DOT 4 brake fluid ok to use?
« on: December 01, 2003, 04:20:17 pm »
I have to get around changing the brake fluid in my car so I bought some of the Valvoline Synpower DOT 3 & 4 brake fluid. Is that stuff ok to use since the manual specifies DOT3, or does it just represent a minimum rating? TIA

DOT 4 synthetic is what I would use.  You just don't want to use DOT5, as it is silicone based and will NOT be compatible with the DOT3,4 that you've used in your brakes.  To switch to DOT5, a complete brake system rebuild is recommended.

I personally use the Valvoline synthetic brake fluid...

What are the advantages of DOT5 over 4?

When you go from really really really fast to really slow, you don't boil your fluid and lose your brakes.  The down side is it makes your brakes feel spongy all the time.
