Non DSM - bad vibration when stopped, auto trans
« on: November 25, 2003, 01:43:51 am »
A friend of mine has a 1994 Cavalier, 2.2L 4cyl, auto tranny.  When stopped in any of the forward gears (D, 2, 1) the car shakes really bad.  I took a look at it today, engine mounts look good, the motor doesn't even shake all that bad from outside the car but you can really feel it when you're inside.

Tranny fluid looks clean and clear red... The motor is from a 95' manual tranny car...

Only thing I could think was that there is no flex section on the exhaust and that could be sending engine vibrations through the chassis at just the right frequency to make it shake like a mofo.

Any ideas?

On a side note I joined the fuel cut club at 6500 RPM in second tonight... time for more mods   :D

16psi, 16g, stock fuel system, no fuel cut for me.
that kind of scares me though...what if it should be cutting but isn't?

I don't think a lack of flex section would cause the shaking. If the engine mounts are fine, then maybe the engine is just vibrating way more than usual?  But kinda weird how it only does it when stopped in a forward gear. Tranny problems maybe, something skipped a few teeth?

A shake in-gear for an auto tranny is sadly common.

The older the car, the cheaper the car, the greater the shake.

My old Auto ESi shook a bit, enough for me to put it in N at lights.

Mike does it run like crap or just shake?

Nice even shake, or "lumpy cam" kinda shake?

only in gear, its ok in P or N?

it doesn't run real rough or anything... Like from outside the car it's difficult to tell the difference between P or N and a forward gear unless you're paying attention... Inside the car is another story, P and N are just normal idle vibrations for an econo car.  Then in D, 2 or 1 the car is shaking like someone cranked the bass... Panels buzz and rattle and such...

yea those and some other engines and even other manufacturers engines back then were pretty bad for that.  I bet its worse with the lights, heater and rear defrost on too eh?

Just a fact of life with an older cheap car.  :(

Yeah, I was thinking it might just be that... I can't see anything obviously wrong anywhere, mind you, I haven't been right underneath but still, I could look around stuff pretty well and couldn't see any trouble.  Oh well...
