Alternator help/recommendation
« on: November 13, 2003, 06:01:13 pm »
Hey guys,
Looks like my battery died and took the alternator with it.  I most likely have a blown diode, as the battery's draining when the car is off.  Any suggestion for good alternators?  Anyone has any experience just replacing the diode?  So far I've found a 90amp canadian model for $175 from KMC parts...

L&R has some better quality 3rd party ones.

Edmonds starters and alternators sells rebuilt ones for $140 I think (they replaced mine on both DSMs)

Someone it the for sale section here has one for $75

rebuild your stock one, cost me about $120 or so. Edmonds Alternator has stock, but I prefer the original over some unkown quantity.

Avoid cheap CT alternators,  actually anything from CT.

OEM, or as Frazor sayz, a good rebuilder......

Hey, thanks for the suggestion guys.  I went to Edmonds an got an Alternator there.  I couldn't afford the downtime to get mine rebuilt, so I got another unit.  Plus I wanted to upgrade to the 90amp canadian model.

It's very nice being able to drive with the radio on :).  It's also like a performance upgrade...I think the non-functioning amp resulted in my boost controller going on the fritz and also a weak spark.  Car runs much stronger now. :)
