Help with my 95 Taon with a 420A
« on: January 28, 2015, 12:53:42 pm »
K,
I need to get this car up and running ASAP!!
I am still in the build process with my sound system. But I have a long list of things I want/need to get done to it in the next 3 months.
I am plugging away at them in my "Spare Time". But I don't get enough of that these days.
I have a heated shop. And want to invite out anyone who is mechanically inclined to come help me out some time.

The Problem: Not starting.
I've tested Fuel pump, it's fine
Changed Relays
Changed Cam Shaft Position Sensor
Changed Crank Shaft Position Sensor

I changed the ECU and it started 2 or 3 times, but doesn't start again.
Don't know what the problem is. So if someone has diagnostic tools, or knows things about motors and stuff.
LoL

I just do Audio.
This isn't my field.
But I've got a warm Shop, and Beer/Pizza maybe some $$ or labour trade for whoever wants to help.

I can go mobile also (come to your place where car is), with all my electrical testing equipment, for seeing sensor signals etc.  I also have a spare 420a ecu *early 420a ecu) as well as a wack load of sensors and such.  let me know!

Okay, no prob, mobile diagnostics is defiantly not cheap! (haha more then a sitting of pizza and beer can cost anyways)

With travel/gas costs it's usually around $75-100 per hour. Most no-starts take one hour to diagnose, but obviously some stuff/problems can take longer.

Sometimes I find people I see coming into my shop, spend a lot of time and money throwing parts at cars trying to fix problems themselves, when some experienced electrical testing/diagnosis and tracing wires/connections can save money and time in some cases, and a lot of the time are fixed by a cheap repair of one broken wire or a bad connection at a connector pin.

Yeah I am aware of shop rate, hence why I was asking people to come out for pizza/beer.
Just looking for extra input and thoughts.

If it can't be figured out with a couple people putting their minds to it, then I might end up taking it to a shop.
Depends on the $$ situation at that time. We'll see how it all goes.

Have you checked to make sure you have power at the injectors? Checked to make sure you have sufficient spark? When was the last time it ran & did it just stop running while you were driving or was it a "I just parked it last night and now this morning it won't start" situation?

Have not checked for power to injectors, or spark.

It was running when I drove it to Edmonds Alternators, but after they installed an alternator, and new battery, it would not start, so I had to tow it home.
Changed a lot of parts before changing the ECU.
When I put in a new ECU it started up, and ran, but had a Check Engine Light.
When I grabbed my Scan Tool the next day, the car wouldn't start again, and the Scan tool said it could not connect.

Did you check all your fuses??  Not being able to connect tells me either a blown fuse, ecm issue, or the off chance something is wrong with your scanner.

Checked all fuses with continuity with a multimeter (not just by eye)
All fuses are fine.

Did you actually pull them out and check them or just go off the pins on top? I had a truck once where the HID's were acting up, checked the fuse and it looked fine, pulled it out of the holder and it had failed down at the prong but still made contact sometimes. Just an idea.

Another thing to check for would be proper power supply going to your ECM.

Seems like a huge mistake from Edmonds and did they gave you a detailed report of why your car wouldn't start ? Could be a bad voltage regulator over charging the system and frying circuitry in the ecu ?
