Flywheel & pressure plate resurfacing
« on: June 12, 2014, 09:13:57 pm »
Would anyone recommend a machine shop in the Vancouver area that can do the above for an AWD?  According to RRE, http://www.roadraceengineering.com/clutchandflywheeltech.htm , special considerations are needed for DSM AWD flywheel / pressure plate machining.

The 2G's flywheel & pressure plate have 15,840 Kms on them.  According to the Mitsu tech, these can be resurfaced as there are no cracks & plenty of material left.  There is just minor warping & blueing of the surfaces.

Otherwise, I’ll pick up a new flywheel / pressure plate.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Thought you had a twin plate clutch?

If it is a stock flywheel and in good shape like you say it can be machined no problem.  Chromoly or Aluminum i would not recommend machining.  Most aluminum flywheels have replaceable friction surfaces.

I've not ever heard of machining a pressure plate.  Not saying it can't be done.

Whats the reason for having the trans out of the car?

I always go to Magnem in  Burnaby on Boundary Road.

Its 50$ for a machining there. You also need to let them know the stepping you'd like.

Dan & Jason, thanks for the info.

Dan, I burned up the twin plate in 2009.  I went with a stock Mitsu pressure plate, RRE No Name flywheel (Chromoly) and an ACT Street Disk.

I am leaning towards a stock Mitsu flywheel and ring gear, Mitsu pressure plate & Exedy OEM spec clutch disk.  The Mitsu OEM clutch disk is no longer available.  The Talon is at stock power levels; it just has better breathing than stock via the 2.5" cat-back.

Exedy or Luk are both good stock level clutch choices.
Objects in mirrors appear to be losing.

I really like the South Bend stage 1:

Cheap, and holds my power so far.  Drives and feels very similar to a factory clutch, easy pedal feel, easy to drive on the street, and seems to release properly (unlike the ACTs I've had).  Just picked up another one for the second 2G I'm working on.

Also had mine machined there.  Can vouch for them.
