starteris turning over not starting then sliping and grinding.

my 63 chevs starter is craping out,it turns over but starts to grind and disengages and then spins freely. almost like the solenoid arm just lets go after a couple cranks.

 I shimmed and checked the 1/8th clearance. nothing. I hear what i hear hear "Crank Crank grindgrind highspeed free spin and little grind sound"

I droped the started and im going to test it tomorrow monring.

Ive googled the hell out of this. no info at all that matchs the issue.

Any help or thoughts would be awesome?

Replace the solinoid. It sounds like its letting go. Brighouse auto electric one block south of the casino in richmond.
6 bolt short block (.02 over evo9 pistons). Straight cut oil pump gears. Ported 2g head and manifolds, GSC S1 cams(adjustable gears), undercut SS valves, bronze guides, Manley springs. Fp's Big T28, stock 02 into 2.5 downpipe, 3" from the flex section back. Apex'i N1 muffler. ETS fmic. 1g bov. 1g throttle body. 255lph pump. 660cc injectors. AFPR. SD on Link V3. 345 ft lbs 345 hp.

I walked over to brighouse from my pops wine shop a half block west. They quoted anywhere from 45-65 dollars depending on the motor.

Just take it over to Juan at Poco auto electric.  He is very smart with rebuilding and/or diagnosing.  He is very reasonable as well.  I used to work there so tell him i sent you by.
