Downpipe with catalytic converter?
« on: August 14, 2012, 09:51:00 pm »
I'm planning to install a 3" downpipe, but would like to keep the cat converter, as the car is for the streets. What options do I have?

Seems like the only ready-to-go solution was from RRE. I'm not sure if they still have those, and anyway, it looks a bit too expensive. As far as I understand it's theoretically possible to get a cat-eliminating downpipe, plus a similar sized high-flow cat converter (something like this), cut the pipe, and weld the catcon in. Or even use the stock converter somehow?

Anybody did this? Or could anyone recommend the shop, which could do this?

RG can make you a $ick one or you can look on eBay. Megan racing is cheap but seems to work fine for me.

Oh, they do that? Good to know - thanks.
But what kind of "$ick"? :D

or you can look on eBay.
Already looking. There are only cat-eliminating downpipes, and "universal" catcons. Found only one RRE cat specifically for Eclipse, but for FWD 2G, and mine is AWD. Looks like the flanges are rotated at different angles?

Yep, that's what I'm thinking about - not expensive, but sounds like not too bad.

I have some generic 3 in cat that I use for aircare. I use some sleeve type clamps on each side. Test pipe the rest of the time.

Yeah, I guessed it's not that big deal. I just never needed to weld anything here, so no idea where to look. :)

I guess clamps would work too.
But if you have Megan's DP - it's cat-eliminating. Did you cut it yourself or RG did that for you?

The guys there like ripping in your car when you have -5% pads left on you breaks.
Just a heads up incase you ever plan on leaving your car there unattended.
My pads were gone by the time I made it to Shuswap. Never mind after the drive home. Metal on metal in the worst way. Yet my mom estimates the guy was doing over 150 when my car passed her while I was at he sleeping after working nights. This was 11am.  My rotors didn't get turned at Lordco till 230. My sister worked at Lordco and called me because they were having a hard time turning them because of the sever heat tempering. Oh well. That's why I do my own shit now when possible.

shitty deal Rob!

as for the downpipe, the cat isn't right in the top of the downpipe like in some newer cars, so you can just get a regular downpipe and put the cat in right after it.  Make sure the second O2 sensor wiring will reach just past the cat.  You may also have to weld in a bung for the second one if it doesn't come with it.
