CDI Dynatek Arc-2
« on: August 04, 2012, 09:59:21 pm »
So the one thing that stood out for me it that every man and his dog is running an Arc-2. So the question is... Is it worth 300.00? is there a down side to it at all?

I just had $300 to waste, and figured why not be like everybody else? ::)
If you don't need it, don't get it.

Everyone that "wasted" $600 for an msd box that kept failing switched to the dynatek because they work AND they "save" you money provided you didn't already but an msd.

There are two downsides: they cost money and you can run more boost. ;)

Edit:  My first Dynatek failed within 5000kms, possibly from prolonged heat exposure?  The second once cut out after getting hot during the test drive.

It cost money.....
Definitely works....
All of us past the 500HP swear by it.

Some of us have seen the unit fail (just stop working)
Replacement was no problem.
Heat seems to be the killer.

not 100% sure about this, but I THINK there is absolutely no benefit to it until you actually NEED it.  IE blowing spark out with extreme boost.

So, if your car does not blow out boost, and you are not making over 500 on the actual awd dyno, then, I say its just a nice looking blue box.

Rob/Dan/Lowell, am I wrong here?

Pretty sure it's needed if you want to run COP aswell.

I've seen many many COP without any ign amps.  One of the reasons for running COP is because those individual coils have lots of power.

Depending on boost levels and gap it will be needed, not necessarily based on x amount of hp though, although higher boost is correlated with higher hp.

Cop can be run w/o but in practice they still seem to require some "assistance".

When I had my previous motor together (9.0:1 non stroker) I swapped to a coil on plug setup and immediately blew out my spark at 5000rpm or 15psi, whichever came first. Swapped back to a standard coil and plugs and it was fixed.

That's when I bought the dynatek and hooked it to the cop. Never looked back

Yea I have a COP setup I got on Jeremy's laser sitting on the shelf here. There's a reason it's still sitting on the shelf. I should pick up a box now though, as there much cheaper now then when I looked a few years back.

but will the amp and cop do better than the proven stock setup?

A good condition stock ignition works fine, and I ran that up to 420whp.  COP setups don't work well on 12v because the coils are wired in series, so each coil only gets half the voltage.  If you're on a tight budget, buy a pair of new OEM coils, NGK wires and you're good to ~400whp, but the car will be senstive to spark plug condition and overly rich mixtures, especially from meth injection.
My Dynatek/COP setup will light up a 10:1 methanol rich mixture at 30psi...

yea but it comes as one part in one box.

I figured Lowell had come up with a way to run two coil packs on one car.
