Camshaft Upgrade + Water Meth Question
« on: July 20, 2012, 08:20:29 pm »
Hey errwon
 Looking to upgrade my cams!
I have a motor coming with brand new Brian Crower 280's in it, but Im looking for something more aggressive, yet stay realistic at the same time.
There is 3 different cams that I have interest in..

-GSC s2
-Kelford 272
-Fp4r

Now I know of many people making killer power with each of those cams. But Im hoping somebody has experience with these cams and can maybe let me know how they perform. Ive read a ton of different posts, and it seems that all 3 are somewhat comparable. Which would compliment my setup the best?

Im running :
-GT3071
-Meth  (12gph at tb and 4gph pre-turbo)
-65mm tb
-Ported stock intake
-3" charge piping + large 3" inlet/outlet FMIC
-Kinetic T3 ss manifold
-Tial 40mm wg
-3" turbo-back exhaust

This setup moves a lot of air. Looking to make good midrange and strong top end.
My Water Meth question is should I stage my meth kit?   Im thinking of staging my Pre-turbo nozzle to start at 5 psi and open my throttle body nozzle at 10psi.  Ive thought about just going progressive, but I think a staged solenoid setup would be cool.  I figured I would trigger the pre-turbo nozzle first based on the fact of how well it aids in increasing boost. Let me know what you guys think.
Im looking to make 400+ awhp next tune.  If my turbo manages to flow efficiently enough with the right Camshaft combo, Ide say I could make more than that..   Big Dogs ring in here.  ;D

I believe its .63 but Ive never actually looked at the marking on the exhaust side. Its a 4bolt Garret t3 housing,  which comes in .63 and .82?
Who knows,   I may just run the BC280's .  They are already setup with the BLE solid lifters and BC springs w/titanium retainers. I just have no idea what to expect from them.

I currently run a 0.63, but I am swapping to a 0.82 and a new tubular manifold.  Full-race figured I will gain 65-80 atwhp at the same boost and keep the same spool with an improved header combined with the larger housing.  I have heard of 50hp gain is a reasonable expectation.

Something to consider when improving the flow through the head to get more top-end power, it needs to be able to flow without choking up top.

Cool.  Good info!    But I cant go TOO crazy right now. As much as ide love to change a whack load of parts.   I already have to do a steering upgrade/bushing job/rework my meth + do engine swap.  haha
As for Cams,  I may just stick with the BC280's.    :)

Stick with your bc280s. the kelford 272s the have longer lift higher etc then the bc280s.

280s from bc are like 270s :p this is what all my
reading has told me.

Then google.
Then read old postings about it.
Then ask.

I was thinking that I might sell one of my spare housings.(gt30)so it wouldn't cost you a fortune.  ;)

Cheap way to increase your top end and peak numbers at the cost of some lag.
I figured you were prepared to compromise some streetability when you mentioned going kelford 272's.   Hey what's a little more boost anyway?   ;D

Haha.   Yea, Kelfords are pretty gnarly cams.  :D

What gt30 housing would you happen to have?

Ide be looking a  Garrett T3 4bolt housing.  The housing on my car currently has the 4bolt round exhaust. But its the slim version of that housing. Meaning the 4bolt exhaust bolts right around the turbo, rather than a collar with 4bolt flange. Most Garrett housings are a little wider with this collar thats built into the casting. Let me know whatcha got Rob!

I like the looks of the GSC S2 cams, and I have the same turbo as you, basically.

as for the housing/exhaust swap, how do you do this without having the fab shop do all the work?

IE, you take off a DSM flanged hot side, O2 housing and downpipe.  Now you have to replace it all, but will it all fit?  I would like to go Garrett T3 instead of the DSM housing, as there is obviously a flow gain to be had here.  Hell even looking into my old school, wee little .48 t3 from the XR4Ti, its way nicer flowing than even a nice DSM housing.

If you want to swap to the Garrett housing, You'll have to but a T3 header and make a downpipe at the very least. Whether you incorporate your wastegate and terminate it back into the downpipe is up to you, but thats up to you.  Thats the only change necessary  :)

I have the 0.82 t3 with 2.5" ID four bolt outlet, slim fit, so it seemed like a direct swap but it turns out that Jordan has the 3"four bolt outlet and downpipe so no go.

If you get a Garrett housing john, Ide suggest you go with a slim fit one, exactly like the one Rob has! The difference being, there is no neck leading to the 4bolt outlet.   The bolts go into the housing on the slim ones.   Like Rob mentioned, I didnt buy it because my housing has a 3" 4bolt round outlet.   Ide be curious to see what the difference in flow is between the 2.5" and 3" outlet housings.
I have to kind of laugh at myself.. I honestly dont know which housing I currently have..   Could be a .82 for all I know. lol
I know they offer all A/R's in both models. Ill look closely when I have the turbo off the car. Most likely this weekend.

there are good adapters from DSM to T3, half inch thick(I have a spacer in there anyways) and work really well, so thats no problem, but I couldn't drive the car to the shop for the downpipe mods, so I would have to pay for the fab shop to do all the work I am fully qualified to do.  that part sucks
