Hafe manifold?
« on: May 03, 2012, 05:55:54 pm »
Hey guys I have a question,
will the HAFE manifold be able to tuck in a FP RED turbo without having to hammer the water pipe?
Long story short, I planned to use an ERL cast manifold, but can't find an ERL cast mani anywhere (all 3 stores that listed them have none in stock and it looks like they may be discontinued), and now I need a manifold that can fit an FP RED, has a provision for external gate, and a mitsu turbo flange.

manifold in question: https://www.rtmracing.com/xcart/product.php?productid=17667&cat=1899&page=1

The turbo is a FP RED for DSM, with the waste gate on manifold option. http://store.forcedperformance.net/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=FP&Product_Code=NTDSMFPRED&Category_Code=DSM-Turbo

If that won't work, can anybody recommend an option that's less than $5-600

Thanks in advance guys.

I think your more likely to hammer down a bit on the water pipe. I have to hammer down my water pipe when I used to run a 20g turbo on my 2g with 2g manifold which is pretty much the same style as the hafe. I think the fp red looks a little bit bigger on the compressor side than a 20g.

and unless you already have the Red, why not work with a different turbo?  Yes it flows lots of air, but its very old tech now, lots of newer stuff flows that much or more with less lag and in a smaller package.

already have it..
well not in hand yet, but it is already on its way..
Was gonna go with the FP green, and saw the red was only $100 more, so I figured might as well go for it. I didn't realize it was that old..
I'm still a young grasshopper in the DSM and turbo world. Just learning as I go, and lovin every minute of it..
For future reference, what kind of turbo should I have looked into ???

well, the red is also a very laggy turbo, not really a street turbo, from what I have seen/read.

Depends on the price for what ever other turbo you are looking at and how much power you really want.  Its great to say "Im gonna make 6 zillion hp bitches"  but in reality you will be super happy with 350 honest wheel hp.

Also huge turbos tend to be not much fun on the street.

well put togeather 16g derivatives are always nice on the street and can push over 300 awhp.

good basic 50 trim turbos can go to 500 and are still street freindly.

If you have the money, look at a ball bearing turbo with some advanced wheels in it and you can go bigger than a 50 trim and have a streetable turbo too.

It starts to get expensive after the basic 50 trims tho.

I wasn't happy with an Evo3 or Ball bearing street turbo (374HP RG dyno)..  about the same as modded V8 power (eg camaro & mustangs) Good response but not enough push.. I suggest 450 honest HP to keep up or beat Corvettes..

I may post up a rebuilt  billet precision 5857 soon. Only 1000kms before it saw some contaminated oil so I sent it in for a rebuild. They retail for $899+ tax but I will probably let it go for $799. I am in the process of getting a gtx 3076 which costs considerably more.

Dan, yes, of course the Evo turbo isn't gonna make anywhere near the power of a bigger turbo, but I was only suggesting that there are better turbos out there than the FP Red right now for the same price.

Cool, good info, and thanks for replies. I'm gonna run the FP red for now, and see how she goes, I mean I did just buy the thing, it'd be a shame to shelf it before testing it out. Ordered a hafe, gonna see if it will tuck in the RED, if not I will look around for something else that fits the bill. If i'm not impressed with the turbo and do decide to shelf it, it won't be for a while. Gonna build the rest of the car and come back to it for final tweaking. Before then I still need to get quite a few things done. I've still got my spare 6 bolt long block and transmission I am going to be putting together with some nice new internals.

Maybe if you don't install it, Forced Performance would take the "red" back with no penalty if you buy a different turbo of equal or greater value.  Just a thought...
