Stright cut oil pump gears.

While taking my 7 bolt motor apart I noticed the helical pump gears were wearing away at front case. I bought a new front case for the 6 bolt motor and used straight cut pump gears instead, for better oil pressure and longevity of the case. Straight cut gear noise is what I believe is the cause of the bearing whine I thought I had. So many sleepless nights. I will try to confirm this weekend. If I do confirm that its just the gears I will live with it because I feel oil pressure is more important than sounding cool.
6 bolt short block (.02 over evo9 pistons). Straight cut oil pump gears. Ported 2g head and manifolds, GSC S1 cams(adjustable gears), undercut SS valves, bronze guides, Manley springs. Fp's Big T28, stock 02 into 2.5 downpipe, 3" from the flex section back. Apex'i N1 muffler. ETS fmic. 1g bov. 1g throttle body. 255lph pump. 660cc injectors. AFPR. SD on Link V3. 345 ft lbs 345 hp.

The helical gears will provide a bit more side load, but I'll bet you are sucking air if you are seeing wear issues between the gears and case.  The helical gears should actually provide a bit more oil pressure/volume than the straight cut gears.  (Helical gears have a bit more gear to gear contact area than the straight cut gears which should provide a bit more flow although I'm sure it's insignificant.)

Thinkin about surface grinding case I believe the driven gear may be bouncing back and forth causing the rattle.

huh???

so you swapped a 6 bolt front cover/oil pump onto a 7 bolt engine? that would screw with the timing marks for the crank, but besides that i never noticed the difference between 6 bolt and 7 bolt oil pump gears..  i have just delt with the strait cut 6 bolt style oil pump gears personally and have never experienced any "whine" as far as i know.....

sometimes i have had the idlers or the water pump "whine" or howl in the morning if you tighten the timing belt or alt/water pump belt too tight. Maybe that is what your hearing?

first you say its "whine".... then you say its a "rattle"......    which one is it???  OH ,,,  where r u from matt?

I know from experience that somtes when a water pump starts to go "whines"

Its a new oem water pump and timing parts. I put the 6 bolt block in my 96 talon with a new 6 bolt front case with straight gears. I'm thinking there is too much clearance between the block and case and the driven gear is bouncing.
