boost leak tips
« on: September 18, 2011, 06:34:52 pm »
Hey i have fix all 8 boost leaks except for 2 the bov and the j-pipe both brand new gaskets but still leak. I've opened up the holes on the bov flange to put in big bolts but still leaks anyone use rtv? or have a tip? My next step for the bov is weld a new flange. the j-pipe im a little scared not to over tighten!

Thanks

any gasket touching oil, I use a thin layer of permatex RTV black on the gasket. Any gasket touching water, use permatex grey (or black) rtv on the gasket.  Any gasket touching exhaust gases, I use permatex copper spray on the gasket. As far as the Bov goes, it should have no problem sealing with a new gasket.  If you resort to using RTV to assist the seal, use only a very thin skin of it on the gasket.

yeah i have had issues with certain gaskets leaking boost around the J pipe area... a LIGHT skim of RTV on both sides of the gasket does help.

My J pipe when I had it, the bolt hole had to be sanded down a bit, to make it smooth. The metal from the original machining had a bit of a bump to it, causing it not to seal.

Exact same thing with my BOV flange.

Just a heads up.

Jasons thread mostly hits it on the head.

Both surfaces have to be flat.  If one is warped or twisted or has a low or high spot it will leak.

Either get the surfaces machined flat or get new flat flanges welded on.
