premium 94 Octane ethanol-blended fuel
« on: January 17, 2011, 05:51:37 pm »
Any gas station has it...Husky. Mohawk..??
Is Chevron 94 octane blended with ethanol???

The old Mohawk 94 made much more power than Chevron 94 (RG dyno results)

chevron is one of the only ones that doesnt. most other stations use the same supplier which, contains ethanol. I only use chevron.

i think Husk/Mohawk and Petro Canada (?) advertise up to 10% Ethonal ... but i wonder how consistant that figure is or how much of a variance they have in the batches coming from the refinery.  it'd definatly change your tune if one batch is 2-3%, and the next fill up you get the batch thats 9-10%

D, you feel like you could gain some results if you ran the ethonal blended gas?

I recently went to a Husky in Surrey and they discontinued it as they said it's expensive to get and they don't sell much of it. BUT...the Husky on Oak and King Ed has it...just filled up there yesterday. I don't see them getting rid of it either considering all the rich assholes around this area with their supercars.  ::)

Chevron 94 does not contain ethanol, it says right on the pump, but the other grades of fuel do.

I have to pay attention to this as the Mazdaspeed DI engine(as do most of the other DI engines if its era) do not do as well on ethanol blended fuels.

Dan, as for the power, was that just a change in fuel that gave the power boost?  Was this repeatable, not just a one time thing?  And did the Husky fuel allow you to tune for more power or just by putting it in you got more power?

Chevron 91 has 10% ethanol.

Not 94.

Chevron has only 2 holding tanks for fuel. 89 or whatever the lowest grade fuel is and a 94 tank everything in between is a mixture of the 2.
So everything other than 94 will have ethanol.

Tommy at RG tolded me their dyno tests on most 4 cyl turbos ...94 Ethanol blended fuel made more power than 94 Chevron.. There is a slight tuning change required to get these results.
In my case ,,,when I change to 94 Chevron they kept the car an extra day for retuning.
94 Chevron seems to tolerate slightly more boost but still made less overall power.

So I would like to find some 94 octane ethanol blended fuel (that Husky/Mohawk used to have)

This sounds to me like Husky is blending more ethanol in their fuels than is required. The effective octane rating is likely higher as a result giving more tuning room. Why do this at all? Easier to meet minimum emissions requirements, less complaints from owners for loss of performance, and more fuel consumption which means the customers are coming back a little sooner for fuel.

If Chevron permits more boost but less power, then the timing advance should be looked at, no? This also makes me suspect less octane in Chevron's 94 vs Husky's '94'...

I'm just thinking out loud...probably wrong

I'd say you are on the right track Kris.

The extra ethanol would in theory make less power for the same boost and timing per given engine and turbo etc.

So I went back to that Husky on Oak and King Ed last week and they don't carry 94 anymore. I guess it's true, 91's as high as they'll go now.

yea for 87 octane cars, I try to fuel up at StupidStore.  I get close to $3.00 or so, sometimes a bit more, some times a bit less for a fillup there.  If you save up a few of those, you can put it towards groceries in the store and make a dent in the food bill.
