Triple Gauge pod install on a 2g spyder
« on: September 03, 2010, 10:48:14 am »
I've looked absolutely EVERYWHERE for a gauge pod for a spyder eclipse. It looks like you just can't get them. They are 100% different than the other 2g's. So with my recent success with doing a fiberglass repair on my old 420a before I sold it I decided to break out the fiberglass and Bondo again and see what I could do with molding a 1gb fitted 3 pillar pod into a 2g spyder.

Let me say first they these parts have very little in common, but its still a better starting point IMO than a blank one. The pods are turned each just a little bit, and they line right up when I'm sitting in the drivers seat, this was the #1 reason I decided to mod this one for my application. Personally I think it probably made it harder..

What I did to get to this point was:

Make a fiberglass cast of the stock 2g pillar
cut down the other pod and fitted it to the cast
screwed the cast to the actual pod, this gives me some play, so when I go over bumps it wont crack on me like my last one, which was done directly to the pillar

Anyways be gentle, as I'm still a noob at this.

Heres some pics from before this mornings sanding:
(In total I probally spent about 10 hours on it getting it to this point, the entire goal it for it to be completely smooth and not look out of place.)

And after some sanding:

I still have a LONG way to go before its perfect....

Im playing with the idea of painting Both pillars a glossy black without any texture at all.
I think it might look good and flow well with the convertable. LMK what you think!

It looks good so far.

A tip for you.......

Make sure that you use a paint intended for this application. High quality/durable/high heat.

Your car sitting in the driveway in the summer can get pretty hot inside. If you dont use the right kind of paint, the pillars will get very sticky and start turning nasty in no time.

Telling you this from experience  :-\

Lots of work, cant wait to see it finished.

Awesome thanks for the tip Sheela,

The general layout for painting "in my mind" so far I'm looking at:

Sand down to 220

Some high build primer, 3-5 coats

sand down to 400

some Hi-Temp Black Gloss Paint 2 coats

sand using 1500ish grit very gently

more black 3 - 4 coats

Clear to finish it - 3 coats

Hey there Mikael,

Check out the link, might want to call to confirm that it fits your convertable.

At that price, I think it would save you some time and effort.

I'm not so sure about gloss black, myself - It will reflect in the windshield. And not match anything else in the interior.
I'd consider flat black, satin black, or even crinkle finish paint?

I just know that even my stock (1g) dash reflects in the windshield more than I'd like... Can't imagine having something glossy thrown into the mix.

Thx for the link, Ive actually spoken with glowshift and it will NOT fit, I spent like an hour and a half on the phone with them.

I've called everywhere and fitted a spyder one up to a normal one, the curvature is different so I would need to fit it anyways.

I already had this triple from glowshift & I really like the pod directions, its actually closer than I could make myself.

Cam, good point....damn....

I'm worried about the reflection, I have a black top and plan on black interior as I come across it, I think it would go well color wise, but the reflection...

no like really different man, like the bottom either comes WAY up to make the top kinda close, or the top is like 2" too short, either way Im going to have a hard line and its going to look stupid. Its also on a different angle, so if I DID cut it, I would still have a huge gap that I would need to try to fill in somehow.

I love the stock look, I also love the custom look, but I personally want this car to have NOTHING thats like halfass bolted on with a black cover. Either way, its 90% complete at this point and I really think that its going to look smooth, well.....I hope so

It may be some more work, but hopefully it'll look better, and its not another $75 (Glowshift ships UPS only) on top of a 2 week wait to get it

If you want something that looks well finished, you might consider using a textile on it? Wouldn't reflect light. Use a black fabric that matches everything else. Or black suede?

Thats an interesting idea, it would greatly reduce my time spent on it. I would definitely need to do both sides.

I like where your going with it, I think suede would kinda be cheesy, But maybe I can find some leather that came with the car, in some messed up seats, and use that. Stock looking anyways???

This guy also said it took him DAYS of streching and pulling at it...

I need this thing in there SOMETIME this year, I got shit to do at some point...

The problem is I guess is that leather isn't nearly as pliable, I would need to find a way to cut it without it overlapping....It might actually be MORE work...
