and John's right....       get a trade or a GOOD degree. Not some degree that is a dime a dozen and wastes your money.

My picks:

Engineering (Mechnaical, Electrical, Computer Science, Chemical) and Pre-Med are the only degrees worth getting. Fuck business. Unless you want to be a CEO someday and you go Business degree->MBA (6 years)

other than that.....

TRADE or start a business. You don't need a degree to be a successful business owner.

You don't need an MBA to be a CEO. Haven't worked for a CEO yet who has one, but the guy sitting in a cubicle about 20ft away from me has an MBA, and he works in our Support department

At the job I am at now (factory/warehouse), I have been there 9 years. In that time we have had 3 plant managers, 3 production managers, 2 production foremen and about half a dozen engineers come and go. All of them had a degree or some such thing, and no experience in the field.

I am just a laborer/forklift driver and I make 80k/year.

My uncle has a grade 9 education and is a manager for a large airline company.

Get a trade in a field that won't go away or be a fad. The last thing you want is to get a business degree and end up a starbucks manager for $11/hr. Or constantly looking for work.

Thats plain luck Mark and border line misleading. Try and find work elsewhere that pays you that. I'll bet you would be hard up to find one. I guess it depends on which union though.

There are definitely bad engineers too. I've worked with lots. They get found out though and eventually get let go or do the shittiest tasks. Attracting the best engineers takes $$$ and with Alberta or the US calling, why would they stay here???

I see a lot of people are saying you don't need papers to do well - Very true. I just have my grade 12 and am running my own business at 23.

Though having papers is always a plus. Papers open doors, so does experience. Experience takes time to acquire. So do papers. Take your time before committing to a post-secondary program you're not going to get into with your heart as you may as well just throw away a shit-load of money and waste a lot of time. Saw this with both my sisters.
