Seafoam - Miracle Product
« on: April 09, 2010, 03:42:47 pm »
Ok so here's the story. I bought my car almost 1 year ago and it's been sitting in my garage doing nothing because I have been pre-occupied with school and work (both full-time).

Anyways I got my car for dirt cheap because A - it wouldn't start and B - it smoked like a chimney.

Well when I went over to look at it I did a compression test and it was 165 across all 4 cylinders. The person who sold it to me said it was a brand new turbo as well (14b). It was indeed a brand new 14b upon further inspection.

Anyhow I get it towed to my house and replace the ECU which fixed the no start issue.

The car would smoke SO BAD, and I mean the worst I have ever seen a car smoke before. It would smoke at idle, while driving, and at wide open throttle. This baffled me because it pulled real hard and valve stems would never smoke like that, and I already verified that the compression rings were good.

I kinda suspected a blown head gasket but there wasn't enough evidence for that.

The last thing I tried was pouring a full can of Seafoam equally down each cylinder. I let it sit there for a week, turning the engine by hand every other day.

I crank the engine over to blow all the Seafoam out and put the plugs back in. I started the car and it smoked REAL bad. It smoked for a good 15 minutes. I took it for a good ride up a few hills and the smoke started disappearing.

The smoke is totally gone now and I can't be happier.

Conclusion - Seafoam is a great product for freeing sticky oil rings. The oil rings were probably stuck because the car has been sitting for who knows how long.

Can't wait to take her to Mission in a couple of weeks!

You should have video documented that, because the makers of Sea Foam would probably have paid you for it.

Ok here's an update.

I went for a quick boot again and it didn't smoke whatsoever.

I parked it in the garage and let it idle for a while and it started smoking again  ???

Really weird. I'll try the full system treatment (gas tank, crank case, vacuum line etc) and see what happens.

i was pretty skeptical of this (or any canned product like this)

but it actually improved my fuel economy and the car sounds "smoother" after i gave it the full seafoam treatment.

I'd just suck some in through a vacuum line. I only poured it down the cylinders to free my sticking oil rings.

and change the oil Glen.  Do not pass go, change the oil BEFORE you turn it over.  And turn it over a few times before you put the plugs back in too.
