I'm Buying a Bloody Flatdeck!!!
« on: July 21, 2009, 02:42:49 am »
So once again my fucking car ended up being towed.

No I didn't try to jump any fuses this time. Sorry for the spoiler.

Out on a cruise heading to Richard's with a buddy, decided to go through the back of the backroads. While going over a small section of gravel. Maybe 1Km, had to shift into 1st after driving over a dip in the road. Shifted into 1st, **BANG** *clack*clack*clack*clack*clack... WTF?! ??? Jump out, look under the car.. "Something's fucked.." Hobble the car off the road to get out of the way and crawl under the car to get a better look. Here's what I found...

Lovely isn't it? That's right.. That's the middle CV joint of the driver's front axle.
This time a dolly... [Off topic: the tow truck driver used to own a 1Gb Laser AWD - same as mine - with a big 16G in it which currently is owned by Jon Javier]

Back at Richard's... again... Deja vu anybody?!

While taking the car apart, here's what I found.. Yes tons of dirt, cv joint grease.. misc. grease, grit, whatever and... metal bits

Isn't it beautiful?

Lovely.. just yeah I was pleased.. Anyway.. scrounged around and ended up having to make one shaft out of two that had salvageable characteristics.
New boot, new grease, put it all back together and she was good to go :)

A few more pictures of metal shit and bits can be found right over here (click me) for anybody who cares.

Did you bottom out and contact something or did that axle just have a defect?

Didn't bottom out at all... There was a dip in the road on a slight up hill that i went over at maybe 10km/h.. then put it into first and that was it.

From my understanding, it could have been caused by a tear in the boot - couldn't find any - causing the grease to leak and dust/dirt to get is, slowly wearing out the bearings and cause the cup to crack... Some crap along those lines. My guess is that stupid clip around the boot was slack and the grease got out/dirt got in that way.

Sucks man

Just so I know for my own reference, what brand of axle was that and how old was it?

Just so I know for my own reference, what brand of axle was that and how old was it?

It was a stock mitsu axle from a parts car.

I love the front of the 1gb Laser.

I was actually thinking of buying a flat deck as well.

On the new-old forum - if that makes sense - someone had posted a craigslist ad with an 89 ford flat deck i think it was.. 8grand! Halfers? hehe

I would say it pulled too far in the out direction briefly.  The triple part is supposed to be nearer the transmission end.  its called a "plunge" joint so that it can extend, for sure, but the strongest part is farther in.

It looks like it broke right then, not due to any earlier cracks or fatigue.  Probably just bad casting or you put down some power at just the wrong time in the trip, when the car was doing something odd due to the road.

That actually sounds more reasonable than my theory.

I'm gonna win the lotto, buy me a nice $150,000 flatbed truck, and not tell ANYone on BCDSM... I'd be getting phone calls day and night hehe

Hey if you're gonna dream.. dream big
