Oil Retrun Line advice....
« on: March 22, 2009, 10:47:09 pm »
Heys guys...

anyways after fucking around with this massive oil leak ive been having...    it turns out it was the oil return line. It had a crack in it under the flex spring.

Luckily Jon came to save the day and drive my ass to Home Depot and grab some clamps and cheap hose.

I am a little wary of the house I bought....    its rating is not to exceed 180 deg F and its melting temp is 300 deg F.

What rubber hose size and brand does everyone else use whop patched there oil return by splicing in over the flex section?

The bugger is still leaking too....    but much less. One of the turbo bolt threads for the return line has started to strip....  so I cant get full squeeze on the gasket on one side. Gonna have to goop the fuck out of it when i replace the temporary hose I have in there now.

You can't order an OEM replacement?

I've used cheap coolant hose for the oil return before without any issues. Just keep an eye on it and you should be fine. You'll need to figure out a better way to fix the stripped threads. Goop will not last long. Also, if you're completely removing the return line in the future, be sure to put a little silicone on the oil pan flange bolts.

man i broke 2 of those stupid ass lines. took mine into coast industrial in vic and said MAKE ME SOMETHING THAT IS NOT GOING TO BREAK!
so for 70 bucks i got a custom made hose out of some fancy hydraulic line and brass fittings ( i think ) i cant remember but it has not leaked in like 9 months.

ps/ i might have an oil pan for you or drop your pan and fix the threads...

A new line from the dealer will probably last another 15 years.  Put a thread insert into the stripped hole instead of `goop`

UPDATE::

A new oil return line from the dealer is $160....     fuck that....

Also, it isnt my oil pan bolt threads that are stripped....      its one of the threads bolting into the turbo for the return line.

My leak has MASSIVELY dimisnished. Although Ive seen a few drops on the crossm-member but no change on the dipstick whatsoever and I drove about 225km today.

I do plan on replacing the temp hose I have on there now. Im curious as to the kind of hose other people have went with? Coolant hose you say? What size and where did you get it from?

Thx guys.

Try a DSM friendly Mitsubishi dealer, I think the price will be much less than $160.

You should be able to heli coil the center cartridge in the car, or at least tap it the next size up.

Use oil rated hose for the return line, not heater hose.  Lordco will have what you need.

$60 from Road Race.

 Exactly

The factory line is more reliable than most people think.

Plus, assembling AN fittings sucks anyway.

It looks nice though.

I run a standard stock line on my other car.

Yeah but in my engine bay you wouldn't be able to see it under the carboard, juice bottles and mud.

okay either my oem oil lines sucked? or something because there is no way in hell i call them reliable or good. they are the stupidest item designed on this car. IMOP nothing worse than puttin the gas pedel to the floor and having your car fill up with smoke. and having to pull over praying that your car isnt on fire.

mine both cracked enough to cause it to spray oil all over my 3 inch downpipe. it was frickin hell. after the 2nd cracked oem turbo return line it was time for something that wont crack or break. get one made, or buy a ss line kit. its not that much more than a NEW oem line. and then you have the piece of mind that it will last forever... NOT 75,000 MILES like it even says on the slowboy racing site lmfao
