i think he means the cylinder that isnt all the way to the top is the one with the bent rod, this is why its not sitting flush like the other piston? just a guess

My guess is the rod bearing is gone.

The thickness of the rod bearing not being there will have cause the one piston to be lower....

were you hearing loud engine knocking??

yeah that sounds logical.  or with oil when he did the wet compression checks.  probably with coolant tho.

There's a pretty good dish on the pistons, I think it would take quite a bit of oil to hydro-lock it on a wet comp. test, plus the hose on the compression tester would take a lot of it too.

were you hearing loud engine knocking??

You should be able to rock the piston by pushing down on the edge of the top/bottom face...
This should verified wiped out rod bearing..
Sometimes a piston can rock enough to close the gap on a spark plug...
Are you saying the pistons don't all reach TDC at the same height??

Besides having to fork out this unexpected money, will be nice to get some mods out of the swap, like the port work and cams. When are they expecting to complete the engine swap?

bent rod will be from detonation probably.  Remember, he just put on a much bigger turbo with no other supporting mods.

Even if the rod bearing was completely gone, like non-existant, they are only about less than 1mm thick.  So, that wouldn't explain the clearance to the deck.  It will be bent.  Chances the rod bearings are serviceable.  Replace them for sure, but they may have still been ok and the crank too.  Mine were and I had a bent 1g rod which is alot more stout than a 2g rod.
