The sooner anybody sets a date the more likely I'll be able to go!  ;D  I've only ever been to the island once and never to Tofino so I'm down for the cruise if all works out.
Outta the game!

I'm flexible with dates. I'll go anytime... But looks like Cam's the only one with a date set in slate. That being said.. How about those days?

And there are plenty of gas stations in Port Alberni. Make sure you fill up there before heading out to Tofino/Ucluelet. They don't have much for gas stations and you won't get gas after 10pm almost guaranteed.

If anyone has driven Pemberton > Lilooet... That's almost what the road is like. It has some rough sections, but it's a super fun road. For guys with 18" rims (i.e. Shane), and if you don't like Prospect Lk Rd, don't expect any better or any worse... An amazing drive on a beautiful day and Long Beach is just fantastic.

I'm down for tofino.  I haven't ventured to that side of the island yet.  From what I hear the rough patches on that highway are going to be freshly paved if that helps anyone's decision :D

Rough roads...

How rough!?  Rally rough?  Or just the occasional light gravel roads?!

According to Maurits, it can be like Prospect Lake Road at times... That means dick all to most people.

But, what that says to me is that the pavement is rough and old, with some patches and the odd bit of washboarding. There will be some cracking and conditions similar to frost-heaves. Anyone with 35 or 40 series tires may want to use some caution. Be sure to set your tire pressures.

Joliesa: If I were to set a date, it would be the weekend of Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16th.

Could we please have a mod make this into a sticky?

The rough patches were mostly tree roots from what I'm told.  I work with a guy who makes the run with buddies on bikes.  I will ask him today how much of it is getting repaved and how rough it is and post the info tonight.

I'd say it didn't get any rougher than when they chewed up the road between horseshoe bay and squamish minus the gravel bits of course. Last time I was out there - October time - they were doing some paving, so it should be fine by summer time I guess.

If people are actually interested, would be nice to know because yeah Tofino gets PACKED in the summer so I don't mind making some phone calls to figure out camping/lodging group prices and etc.

I'm defiantly down for this if my car is moving at that point in time, if not ill hitch a ride with Maurits. The drive out there is awesome, so don't be a pussy about the road quality and lets make this happen.

I agree guys, I usually spend a couple days out there every summer...if you want to have a place to stay out there in the summer, you should book now. The sooner the better.
I just booked our room for June @ approx $150/night at the Tin-Wis Resort. Totally worth it, a second floor balcony view of the Pacific Ocean. The furthest West you can go in all of Canada. Cuz you and I know the West Side is tha best side!  ;D ;D ;D

If you wait till the last minute, you could easily pay $400+ a night, that is if you are lucky enough to even find an opening.

As far as the roads go....I'd say one of my favorites to drive on. The closest comparison IMO would be driving through Golden, BC on the #1.
Not even nearly as high as that, but bendy like that.

Fuck man, now I'm getting jealous. I want to take my car too dammit! If only they would alter the ferries to accommodate my car!

Come on guys... What say you? Let's make this an official meet. There's plenty of time to plan ahead. I can do the VI side of things, someone over there can do the mainland.

Goran was telling me someone tried to do this a couple years ago and everybody got stoked but no one actually went and that's pretty much why he's bitching out already.

Cam, would you be going in your car?
