So im pretty sure my engine has crank walked
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:52:02 pm »
So after getting my car unstuck out of the snow my engine started to make a ticking noise from the bottom end.  My father whos a mechanic thinks its my crank, I immediatly think, great.... crank walk  ???.. I have a 7 bolt with about 99,xxx miles on it.. It doesnt tick when idleing, or in netrual when driving, only ticks when I am accelerating, and only in the lower gears.. can anyone confirm if my engine has crank walked and if I need to start my 6 bolt rebuild asap now?

Thanks in advance

What you need to do is use a dial indicator, and check for crank free play.

I only know the basics about crank walk but i have a hard time believing that it would happen after your car got stuck in snow. You could have damaged something else that have led to your problems.

Well im hoping obvouisly its not.. But i cant seem to pin point exactly where the ticking is coming from, sounds like the bottom end... would over revving cause crank walk?  or atleast aid it along... cuz thats how it happened.. i over revved and it starting ticking after that

Does it sound like a valve tick?

My engine makes a ticking noise when under part throttle, comes from the bottom end, but it's been doing that since I got it in the summer.
Under WOT its gone.

Those symptoms don't sound like crankwalk.  But to be sure just measure the crank free play.

check your oil level.

As well, I'm not sure its actually possible to over rev these engines as they have rev limiters at 7500 rpm.  Plus lots of us take them to 8000 and beyond.

I never heard of an engine ticking when it crank walks.  All the ones I've heard of the clutch sticks to the floor when the crank moves.  I would check the oil in the engine.  Or better yet drain out the oil into a clean pan.  Look for metal in the oil.  Check your crank end play.  If that crank is slamming around in the engine it should be doing more than ticking.  You should get heavy clunking.  I've pulled 8500 RPM on stock valve springs and the engine lived.  Sounds like a lifter thats going bad.  Ticking under load.

if a rod went thru the side of the block, you need a new block.  Probably the head can be saved, but if the rod was jammed in the up position, it will probably have taken out some valves.
