91 swift gt harsh loud grinding on downshift

 As it says, the owner suspects a main bearing, i stopped downshifting when i drove the car because it was the nastiest grinding sound as I engaged the lower gear. We have some tools and the will of iron chinese gods, what should I be looking for?

I keed... I had a 89 Swift GTi, they had biodegradeable trannys that I was told do not take well to cheap rebuilds and was cheaper to replace it , I picked up a wrecker rather than rebuild. I think I paid $200 at ralphs.

It sounds like a syncro is gone if its grinding on the down shift.  If it was a main bearing that was gone it would be growling when driving.  Thats a major undertaking to rebuild a manual trans.  Read the overhaul manual a few times.  If you get something wrong say bye bye to trans.

it feels good when driving and upshifting, it is only when you try to downshift that the loud crasy noise starts. I just got here and it looks like my room mate replaced the clutch himself, so maybe he's looking at a new tranny...cause i have never seen him fix a car, or own one till now.

so driving this morning shift into second from first and something in the tranny annahilates itself and pops it in to neutral, wont allow me to go into gear while in motion as well as the car will not start even tho the electricals are all good.

...ripped the tranny out turns out it was a loose flywheel bolt from the clutch job he did. Came out so far it locked up the clutch assembly.

Ya a dragging clutch would cause a grinding in the trans.  Good you found the problem before it cost you a ton of money and time.

yea, the damage was pretty damn light considering what could have happend. Trans is all back together and in, the bugs and lack of light stopped us from finishing, should be good by late tomorrow.
