A night working on the 89colt GT
« on: March 10, 2008, 01:02:00 pm »
Well my buddy finally aquired a original 89 GT.  Its black and in decent shape.  The paint has some fading areas and one of the fenders is chipped up a little from the door.  There is a small dent in the rear hatch and the front grill is broken.  It runs really strong and only has 183 k on it  (km's).  Everything is stock right now but we have FMIC, 450cc, DSM link, 16G evo turbo, 2G o2 housing, Aeromotive FPR, walbro 255, MBC.  The night we took these pictures we custom made a BOV re-circulaton pipe so it would run good again.  For some reason the previous owner thought it was a good idea to throw the stock one away for the "ricer" effect.  jeesh,  dang idiot.  So we looked at what was going to be required to put the SMIC in and you have to cut quite a bit of metal and bumper out in order to fit it.   He decided not to hack up the original bumper or subframe and opt to just go fmic right away. He is going to run the 1.6L till she blows and then swap in a good 4g63.

Anyways, the pictures.  The purple colt (mine) has a 1990 4g63 6-bolt in it.  It will be getting a FMIC, 650cc FIC, 3" GM mas and MAFT in the next month with a aeromotive FPR.  It already has 2.5" exhuast, evo mani, MBC, Walbro 255 HP, K&N.

and the purple colt "sleepy".  I dont drive it in the winter so its very dusty and dirty.  A good spring cleaning is in order.

Thats it for now!  More will be posted up as he upgrades it.

Very cool stuff!!

As for the 1.6 blowing up, its probably not going to unless you purposefully do something to induce it to do so.  The 4G61 is pretty much the same as a 4G63.  Plus it has an even better rod ratio so it can rev to the moon.  Get some Talon C/D cams as that is one of thier weak points.  Talk to Emerson about these, he seems to have more than his fair share of Colt knowledge. Mike M as well, obviously.

I would suggest using a 14b for the turbo tho, an Evo 16g is gonna be pretty big for a 1.6, especially with stock cams, they won't be working togeather very well.

yeah we are doing a FMIC and putting the 14b in along with the 1G turbo 450cc jectors and the 1G mas and throttle body and also the talon ECU for now till he can get dsm link.  89 colt GT's came stock with Eproms ;)

brett, you can send the colt eprom to get it re-socketed for dsmlink. The cost was pretty trivial. My ecu is coming back from ECMTuning with dsmlink. I will be running dsmlink as well.

This page describes using a Colt ECU with DSMLink.

i have some 2.0 stock cams if you need also

cool. thx for the info!
yeah we will be socketing the stock ECU and running dsm link with it as well.

We are still in the progress of putting in a 14b and taking out the 11b.  We just put one on but it turned out to be fookered and would hardly spool.  Im just waiting for my ported one to come in on greyhound from jay whit.

After we finish that we will be putting in a ebay fmic kit.  Trying to decide which kit is the best to buy with minimal cutting of the colt GT.

From your experience calvin, what fmic kit worked the best? or did you have to custom fab yours?

and no worries about the cams.  I have like 2 sets lying around in my basement lol.  Thx anyways tho!

31X9X3 frount mount intercooler bar and plate is on my colt right now. minimal trimming to the bumper to make fit, i had to use zap straps on the bottom to hold the intercooler to the lower lip of the stock gt lip. But now i have a cyborg bumper.

the piping is more or less the same as a talon except for the pipe from the turbo. Mine i routed up top.

good luck

Yeah I looked at it and it looked like I couldn't route it under the turbo like my talon.  There isn't enough room on the Colt GT.  Did you use any sort of heat shielding to protect the hot pipe when it goes over the manifold?
