After 60+ man hours the rims are done.. *bling*
« on: June 13, 2007, 10:39:06 pm »
after an absurd amount of work I've finally completed them... the tranny pull had nothing on this job, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.. but now it's all worth it.

I started by stripping off all the enkei factory silver powder coating, 6x11$ cans of paint stripper later it was done..

Then the sanding, polishing, and cleaning... ridiculous, I have he-man fingers now.. I took out all the curb marks and left the very outer lip a satin finish to offset the polished surface.. I also shaved off the "JM VIA" thing that you can see on one of the spokes in the original pic.. whatever that is.. seams to be on all rims.

Masking was also intense.. 3 fine lines laid per rim, so razor sharp it's ridiculous... fine line tape was ~$20 for 50ft, wtf?   ... I used coloured electrical tape cut into fine strips, worked mint, it's vynil, just like the fine line tape... everything that's masked is polished   took ~1.5 hour per rim to complete masking.

Then 2 coats of etching primer followed by 2 coats of sandable primer. Then wetsanded with 400.. cleaned and primered again with 3 more coats of sandable primer.. wet sanded with 600 to a show quality flat surface.. cleaned again.. then 2 coats of colour.

I then de-masked them and went over them again doing a quick re-polish to get rid of any oxidization that had occured.. I cleaned them all again and put down 7 coats of clear...

In a couple days I'll get my new proxy 4s mounted and in a week I'll wetsand the clearcoat flat and buff it back out.

I spared nothing with this jobber.. these things look insane if I do say so myself... without further adew..

DURING AND AFTER:

Let me know what you think... the paint is the same colour as my valve cover.. and many other things in the engine bay.

p.s.  Might not be chrome Robin.. but they're pretty close.. and I did all the work myself  8)

very nice!!  You even spent more time on them than I did on mine.  I did cheat a bit tho, I had em blasted first with nut husks or something.  I didn't have to do the paint removal.

You are the only other one that got rid of casting marks and damage tho, nice :)
