Thread stripped and bolt wont come out
« on: July 10, 2006, 12:12:24 pm »
So while trying to put in a new 2g exhaust manifold I ran into some issues with the exhaust manifold to turbo bolts.  I got the 3 bolts out fine but the nut on the stud was siezed.  I ended up trying to get the actual stud out, but it was stripped.  I eventually got it out, but didn't realize that the actual thread in the turbo exhaust hosing is now stripped aswell.  So I attempted to screw in a new bolt.  And now the bolt is part way threaded in, and now is stuck.  I can turn the bolt but it will not move up or down, even with me pulling up on the bolt while turning it.

I'm not sure what to do with it at this point.  Do I have to try to hammer it and break the threads inside?  Am I going to have to rip it all apart again and bring the exhaust housing to a shop to get it re-threaded?

Heat my friend, think heat. Know anyone with a oxy setup? Heat the surrounding area (not the bolt) red hot and then turn. Don't break it off a lot more work.

The bolt isn't seized, it turns easily, but wont move up or down.

Oh sorry, I misread that, anyway you can get the the turbo in a vice? Pull on the bolt and turn with some vise grips?

I don't think you'll find a trick to get that out. You'll have to pull on it while loosening or try to pry it away from the manifold with a screwdriver while spinning it.

Was this new bolt larger than the old one? Was the bolt cutting new threads?

It should come out of there if it went in.

When you get it out, you have to either tap the hole to a larger size yourself, take it somewhere to get it rethreaded, or try to put a heli-coil in there.

I tried that, pulling on it while spinning it and didn't have any luck.
I figured seen as the old bolt was stripped maybe when i screwed it out I wrecked the threads.

The bolt was the same as the other 3, so unless the stud is a different size which it didn't appear to be then it was the right sized bolt.

I dont understand what bolt cutters would do? That has nothing to do with the problem.  I will try just reefing on it with the vice grips again.

I'm pretty sure I stripped that exact bolt a while ago, and bought a helicoil kit for it. I may still have it around, I'll look for you

I as well had the same problem. You wouldnt happen to be using an SBR stainless manifold to turbo gasket would you? If so you need to widen the bolt holes in the gasket for proper fitment.

A heli-coil works great for the fix.

No its a 2g manifold going to a small 16g with stock turbo gasket.  I stipped the stud when taking it out and didn't think that i stripped the actual threaded hole aswell, which is dumb of me.  So I got new bolts and now in this mess.

Andrew if you have that , that would be awesome, maybe we can do an exchange for the shirt i've had sitting brand new in the bag for 2 years for you.

Are there any good writeups on how to do a heli coil, because i've never done one before.

I still have the issue of actually trying to get this bolt out still.

So did you ever get it out? No matter what, it looks like it's going to be a pain to extract...

And helicoils are easy to do. I didn't even fuck up when I did it... you just use the specified drill bit to kill all the old threads, use the included tap to cut new threads for the coil to sit in, then screw the coil in.

The kit I think is 12x1.25, maybe 8x1.25, I forget. Do you know what size the bolt is?
