Loose Oil cooler/filter on '91+
« on: May 09, 2005, 12:01:14 pm »
I am sick and tired of the Oil filter getting loose like a biatch

I've used a long socket to tight the bolt and a spring washer on the bolt side, however it's no use filter get's loose after just a day of driving.

I've read the fixes posted on Vfaq with the spacers, and will try doing it soon. However I just wanted to know if anyone else had similar problems and how they fixed it.

I knew what had happended to u right away that way. because it happend to me to on my first dsm. Someone has over tightened a oil filter at one point fubaring the threads. i solved this by 2 drops of locktight on the threads. it was tight but a little effort and i could get it off.

Once you've tightened the nut with a long socket it really shouldn't move anymore.  Try locktite on the nut maybe...

Make sure it's BLUE or purple loctite.  No Red.  You want it to come off at some point

When mine was leaking a bit, I drained my oil and removed the filter.

The thread that the filter screws onto has a nut screwed into it inside that braces it to the cooling assembly.

I took this apart, replaced the o-ring with a new one, adjusted the threaded tube and retightened everything before attaching a new filter.

I have never had oil leaking or a loose filter since.

I had that problem.  Monitor it CAREFULLY.  My engine died 'cause of it.

Well, first the car goes on Fire and burns most of the oil than it smokes down the highway and looses 3 liters of oil. I am scared driving it now, I'll do the lock tight tonight, I'd do washers too but I thing the rubber O ring seen better days.

PS: I figure I can loose oil 2 or 3 times more before engine quits completely

DO NOT over tighten this on a 91+  There is a coolant/oil heat exchanger in that round cookie looking thing. If you crush it, you stand a very large chance of mixing your coolant and oil.  And not in a salad dressing good way either.

Simple solution.

Filter relocation kit with a oil to air cooler.
