Heater core replacement (damnit!)
« on: May 04, 2005, 02:03:18 pm »
Anyone had to do this yet? I haven't found much information except for diagnosis, and a tech article on pulling the dash. Any considerations I should take into account before ripping my entire car apart, or should I just bring it to L&R or something?? How many hours would you figure a job like this would take? This is going to be a bitch either way.

I am not sure if many performance shops would want to take this on.

You may want to price out how much the Stealership would want to do it.

I'm just going to do it myself on monday. It will be "fun". Now I've just got to pick up the service manual and find a steering wheel puller. 8) I'll take pictures, and hopefully be able to write up a tech article for those who might encounter the same misfortune.

The old adage is true: "DSM - turning ordinary people into mechanics since 1989."

You could also say, "DSM's - Causing people to go broke since 1989."

I would tend to agree.

I don't think you need to remove the wheel to remove the dash

Maybe so, but knowing these bloody cars, the time I try and save by not removing it will cost me more time and frustration than if I had just done it in the first place. I think it would be much easier to pull the dash straight out rather than up and over the wheel would it not? Correct me if I am wrong.

Definately more befitting.

You can just lower steering column without removing the steering wheel.  That will help.

Alright Sean, but if this doesn't work, it's your ass. j/k

have you had to do this before? Maybe I'll try it. I'd really rather NOT have to pull my steering wheel, but I just thought it would make things less complicated... If that makes any sense. Thanks for the replies.

I haven't done this on a Talon yet.  But once you've done it on an 85 Volvo, everything else is just a walk in the park :p

Just remember that if you disconnect your airbag to pull the steering wheel, you'll have to get it reset at the dealership or your light will stay on.

Keep 'em coming guys. Thanks Kimyee I hadn't even thought of that. If I am not mistaken, I am supposed to disconnect the passenger-side airbag as well right? So I guess a trip to Satan is inevitable. :(
