i am thinking of doing this.  all the testimonials sound positive.  its a very cheap DIY alternative to getting expensive black seats.

has anyone here ever tried this?

That's actually funny, I was just telling my friend that I want to get my entire interior dyed black, or find a tan interior and do my own tan black scheme.

I have done a entire 240 interior like that, looked really good when done. The key to anything is prep. if it isn't done right that stuff won't stick to jack all. I did that interior abot 2 years ago and its going strong, although he is pretty hard the car in general (in all it's a fairly lengthy project to do right, but the reward can be a nice interior). Nothing beats the real deal tho!

wash the seats in a solution that wont leave a any kind of a coating  on the material. light detergant works well for this. Doing this will allow the dye to penetrate all the way through the fabric, and wont leave and discoloured areas. So, basically take off any of that scotch gaurd shit and any other stuff that maybe left in the fabric and dying it will go smoothly. In the end the job will come out better if your patient with the whole proccess. between cleaning and dying it should take up atleast a weekend, due to drying and such!

i can't find Dupli-color Vinyl and Fabric paint anywhere!  i've tried Lordco, Walmart, and even Canadian Tire.

At CDN tire, i found this stuff by "U-fix-it" touch up fabric paint.  would that do the job?  the brand and the fact that its "touch-up" or to renew the fabric is not exactly dye right?

Don't do the seats, it will feel like crap.  You can get them re-padded/wraped for about $450.

it actually works really well, and doesn't feel bad at all, at work we dye shit all the time, makes it look new again, covers up stains, I was actually quite amazed when I first starting using it, though I wouldn't go for dupli-colour, Car Brite makes much higher quality dyes... I have no idea how much though, or even where to get it, but if you could that'd be a better bet...

True, but I'd rather have knock-off seats than recovered stock clothies
