CEL assistance?
« on: January 23, 2005, 01:56:20 pm »
Last night my CEL came on during normal cruising, I hadn't even boosted that day. My car started runnin like crap, idle is quite rough, wants to stall when I come to a stop, hard starting, lack of power/bogging. When it can manage to hold an idle it idles quite low at about 650-680 rather than the normal idle at about 730-770rpm. Anyways, I looked up the vfaq on how to check cel codes and didnt seem to have any luck with the multi meter method(The vfaq wasn't much help). My car is running like crap and I was wondering if any Victoria DSMer's that have gone through this before could offer some assistance in helping me figure out which code(s) it's throwing ethier with a data logger or (w.h.y.). I'll buy you a case of beer of you're choice! Any help at all would be much appriciated. I miss my boost... Thanks

What kind of multimeter did you use? You have to use an analog one because a digital will not respond fast enough.

I have a digital. I guess that would explain my difficulties.

I'm not 100% but you should be able to use an LED to get your code.  Or better yet have someone stick a logger on the car.

Later, Vlad.
all go, no show!

I was sucessful with the led this morning. It was throwing a code 14 which is the tps sensor. Hopfully I can get my hands on a working one. Hopefully doing some data logging this weekend as well.

Kevin ,before you buy one, try adjusting yours.  It WILL throw a cel if its out of adjustment.

1G TSi, it wants 0.48-0.52 volts at idle.

My tps sensor would throw a code even after adjustment, it would cause hesitation, bucking.. much like fuel cut. The cel would come on intermittantly along with the symptom.
If your cel is on all the time I would first adjust it like John says, if your symptoms r like mine, you'll have to replace it.

Loosen the screws and it turns a little, the mounting holes are slotted.  All it is is a rheostat in a can, just like an old radio dial.  Just like an old radio dial they can also wear out in only on localized spot, so you could end up with the car running great except for 100-110kph cruise or something.

You should be able to check the resistance across the terminals at idle thru WOT when it's unplugged, then plug it back in and test for the correct voltage from idle thru WOT, tweak it if necessary.
