How to unsolder EPROM?
« on: December 20, 2004, 08:28:47 pm »
Besides a regular one-by-one pin, which might damage the pins

Is there any other easier/safer way to unsolder the rom?

solder wick, but if you are inexperienced take it to someone who knows because you can mess up the copper pads.

you can try this, i found it at http://www.dsmchips.com but they are TMO instructions, i personally wouldn't try it myself my soldering skills are weak

1. Clean off as much of the conformal coating from the TOP and BOTTOM of the EPROM with acetone, or fingernail polish remover.
2. Add some fresh solder to each pin before attempting to unsolder it.
3. When you have unsoldered all 28 pins, grab a whole row of 14 at a time with a needle nose pliers, and wiggle them.  This will help snap the leads loose from the holes in the board, making it easier to remove the EPROM without damage to the ECU.
4. Slide a small screwdriver under one side of the EPROM and slowly work your way across underneath it, wiggling the screwdriver back and forth a little as you go. If you feel a lot of resistance, or see the circuit traces are vias start to pull up, STOP, Figure out which pin are still hanging on, and try cleaning them up before proceeding.

I think Mike Meron will socket it for you too.  I'm going to have to socket mine and I've got experience wiring stuff up with solder but not much electronics, I'm going to leave it to someone else for the $30-$40 it'll cost.

Yeah or solder vacuum thing I'm not sure if it has a name.  You do it one by one taking the solder off then pull the chip right out no messing around needed, but yeah like cole said dont heat things up too much.

Solder sucker.  But the solder wick is cleaner and easier to use (imo)

Thankx to everyone, i'll give it a try durig holydays.

On another note, I've searched around and all the EPROMS I found had added features like limits off and boost gauge, stutter box etc, but none had reworked or more aggresive maps, are there any?
