Flex section
« on: December 08, 2004, 12:49:33 am »
I'm just getting into building myself some exhaust, and I read somewhere that the flex section put into the downpipe was so as the exhaust heated and cooled nothing would crack, but the hangers are rubber, so woudln't it be able to move anyway? I've seen that buschur sells systems with or without flex..  know there must be some more significance to this...

I think it's there more to accomdate engine movement than exhaust movement.  If you run without, especially without a stock type brace on the DP you run the risk of cracks forming in the exhaust and maybe even manifold/o2 housing.  I'd run one.

We've got a tranverse engine arrangement, the motor and DP are going to tilt up and down under abuse, but the exhuast can only really move side to side or forward and back and only a limited amount at that, if it's all rigid the movement's gonna happen somewhere, probably with a crack.  That and it should help reduce NVH by helping isolate the exhaust from the engine.

Not putting a flex section in will put a lot of stress on your exhaust manifold/turbine housing/O2 housing.  Look at how much your engine rolls when you rev it.  All that movement needs to be taken up by the flex section.

Also if you are making the exhaust yourself it won't have a perfect fit. Flex sectio will give you some room to play with.

Although Wired Flexs are expansive you can find a bare section, like the ones on dump trucks. It sells for around $20-25 per foot for 3"OD.

Ok here we go:

Flex sections: http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=tp&Category_Code=FLX

I have had awesome experiences with www.atpturbo.com .  Fast shipping, cheapest prices I have found anywhere, willinging to make secondary invoices for cross border taxing purposes, willing to ship to the Letter Carrier without any problems.  I need to put in another order for more intercooler piping, and couplings among other things with then soon (after exams are done) so depending on how much of a rush you guys are in and if it's worth it I would be willing to combine orders to save money.
