1g turbo fwd to awd conversion?
« on: October 04, 2004, 08:16:33 pm »
I found a turbo 1ga for pretty cheap (a/c, sunroof, power all, $1500ish), but the catch is that it's fwd. I'm assuming that it's possible to convert a fwd dsm to a awd dsm, but my question is, at what cost? would it be better to just find a awd model? or lay down the cash for a conversion? and if it is "economically feasible", who could do it?

It would cost more than a good condition AWD.

I'm talking more than $7500.  In addition to a new tranny/tcase, rear diff, rear drive axles, different rear suspension, you'd also need the AWD floorpan (have fun cutting that out) as well as an AWD ECU, yadda yadda so forth and so on.  2Gs it's doable, but just ask Andreas (Zervas) how much he's spend converting his Spyder to an AWD.  More than it'd cost to get an M3.  Is it worth it?  Hell no.

yarr!    alright, that plan is outta the window.
thanks for the info though, I'd best continue my search for a 1g awd (although, those 2nd gens are starting to look real good)

The scary thing is I think the 2G's convert to AWD easier than the 1Gs...

They do.  Satan cheaped out on the floorpan (yay for mass production of the floorpan) and made them all capable of fitting the AWD driveline.

ECU will be the same, as long as they are both turbo.

Mike Meron is the guy to ask about this, he has plans for some AWD goodness I believe, and has the experience to actually know what is needed.

Graeme is right tho, it won't be cheap(well relatively speaking anyway)
