coolant flush, should i add redline?
« on: November 09, 2003, 02:35:58 pm »
So im thinking about doing a collant/radiator flush. drain it all out and then put some new stuff in there. I hear alot about that redline water wetter stuff. So im thinking i should put that in. But with the colder weather upon us, do I still need my car to run 20 degrees cooler (thats what it said on the bottle) This stuffs supposed to keep the engine cooler in hotter temperatures right? but with our weather the way it is now, do I need it? or should some good antifreeze do the trick instead? with teh antifreeze im thinkin ill do a 60 to 40 mix with water.
also, if redline is the way to go. How much would I approx need? when i saw the bottle at teh shop, it was pretty small.
some advice would be great, thanks.

Some people here in town have did some searching and found that in their hondas if they run like 600ml coolant, quarter a bottle of redline water wetter and rest water they get best cooling, thats on a honda.  I say 55% coolant, 5% water wetter and 40% water.

Im running 60/40 coolant/water.  Cause of the cold though.

so basically, a 60/40 of coolant to water, and a dash of water wetter?
-and that dash would be like what, maybe 1/4 of that bottle?

I personally wouldn't use any watter wetter.... I was using it to get by at the track.... cuz water is just straight dangerous, and your not allowed to run any anti-freeze

cuz its FREEZING cold now you wouldn't want any chance of the rad fluid freezing... I would put 70/30 anti-freeze and water.. and no water wetter... maybe an 1/8 of the bottle to replace with water... but make sure 70% of the mix is anti-freeze

water freezing in the block would be the worst thing in the world... basically bye bye motor...

I don't think you'd need anything more than 60/40 out here.  When you pick up a jug of antifreeze it should have a chart on the back with temperatures and mixes.

I don't think anyone runs more than 60/40 in the old country (praries) where -40*C for weeks at a time is not uncommon.  It barely even snows here   :P

yea it doesnt cool any better or protect against freeze up any better after around 60/40.

For this area 40/60 is PLENTY.  I have only about a liter and a half of coolant in my system(I will get more) but it tested to -17.
