Engine miss and cloud of smoke?

Yeah to day coming home fron work over port mann I stepped on he gas going up the hill doing about a 100 in 5th and the engine felt like it missed and there was no boost I saw abig cloud of smoke out the back?I suspect it is my timing sinc I have some pinging in my engine and I can make it stall if i juggle the rpm's while idling. If it is my timing anyone willing to help me out since I have no tools or a place to tune or set timing( Down for school) any info or help would be much appreciated.thanx
