Update : Car smokes when idling
« on: November 18, 2003, 10:12:51 pm »
One very annoying thing I notice about my car is that when I sit idling for more than 3 minutes somewhere, the car starts to blow out blue smoke, a noticable amount.

It does not do it when I start up or when stopped at lights or when I park for less than a minute or two - there is no smoke at all then.

I am using Semi-synth 10w30 Esso (about 1000KM ago it was changed)

Also, whn idling should the oil gauge not be within the normal zone? Mine is not, only when accellerating and driving does it stay within normal, stopped it dips about 1/8" to 1/4" below the low normal mark. When first started, it stays on the high side of normal until the engine warms up.

the oil guage is reading similar to mine... sounds about right...

I'm guessing its not a piston ring leaking oil, cuz that would be blowing blue all the time...

my guess is that either your turbo is going and is in the early stages of failing OR your valve guides are fucked.... valve guides usually blow blue when you first start the car though....

DSM oil gauges are crap to begin with, mine does the same thing though, so don't worry.

As for the smoke, its the valve stem seals.  I had the exact same problem a while back.

Well, I got the valve stem seals done, and the bigger fuel pump, and some of those mount inserts for the front while I was there.

Car now smokes worse !

Today:
Lowell did a leak-down test - I'm about 8%-ish so that was ok.
Checked the turbo for play - it was fine
Checked the plugs - they looked ok - replaced the anyway

Must be the Turbo seals I guess.

So next week in goes a new 16G EvoIII Turbo

I'll get a bigger flapper on it and have it ported, and get the o2 and manifold ported too.

Should I get it clipped? Anything else I should do to it before it goes in?

I hope to GOD this fixes my little smoke problem - money is getting low.

dont bother with clipping unless you want it to spool slower.
the evo 16 whould hit really hard  @ 3500 and smoke some rubber by 3750 clipping it would only make it a pig in traffic
