Looks like my EVO 16G Turbo is toast
« on: November 13, 2014, 03:06:31 pm »
Hey all,

I am looking for some advice...
I believe my current turbo is dead :(. It is exhibiting the same signs that my original one did 10 years ago when it died. Which means it is time for a new turbo.

My question is whether I should get another genuine "MHI" Mitsubishi TD05H "Evo III Big" 16g or would it be worth it to upgrade to the FP 68HTA for DSM?
With the mods I already have is the 68HTA going to perform better than the Evo III?

This car is my daily driver and I do not want to put any more into it then the new turbo. I already have a 2G Kinetic Front Mounted Intercooler, a hardwired Walbaro 255lph high pressure fuel pump, K & N FIPK, 1st Gen Blow-off Valve, Turbosmart MBC,  3" Apex’I N1 Cat-back stainless steel exhaust, and Upper intercooler piping.

Cheers,

Sean

Unless you have injectors and some way to tune them I would stick to what you had.
What sort of boost were you running on the 16g?

No I don't have anything to tune with.

I only have stock injectors.
I usually ran it between 12-16psi. I usually hit fuel cut around 17-18.

I can pick up a new 68HTA for the same price as a new 16g. Will the 68HTA take longer to spool or give me any other problems, if I use it in my current set up?

Call ADP and rebuild it for $380, reinstall and you're done.  The HTA will flow more air, so you'd have to run even lower boost to avoid fuel cut.  Or else you'll have to get a tuning option and injectors and take it to Lowell for a good tune. How much have you got to spend???  How bad do you want to go faster???  ;D

no sense getting a bigger turbo unless some sort of tuning option, injectors etc are in the plans.

$380 sounds much better than over a $1000 :)
I will contact ADP thanks everyone!

Tuner Cars

Don't bother boosting if you don't invest in tuning.

Turns out my turbo was still fine. It was faulty spark plug wires and a few other small things. :)

But now my head gasket needs replacing :(
