Borg Warner EFR Series Turbo..
« on: March 24, 2014, 12:09:55 pm »
At the moment im hoarding parts for a build. Looking to get 400hp out of my GSX, but a few things have me stumped. As you all know im a new DSMer. Im planning on spending a bit on some parts. The Borg Warner EFR turbos have caught my eye, mainly because my Focus has a stock BW K03 twin scroll and its great, quick spool, 20psi boost. Has anyone here ever used one or have any input? The 6258 and 6758 turbos use a t25 scroll casing and the twin scroll uses the t4. I was thinking of going with the 6758, i know single scroll would be an easy install but the twin scroll has its advantages (ie quicker spool) and disadvantages like id need to spend more on a custom manifold. Im a welder by trade and have a the tools to modify or build a custom manifold. Is the twin scroll worth the trouble?

It says the 6758 is good to 225-450hp. So you should hit your number.
I would step up to the 7670 375-600hp then you will know you have enough.
Possibly turn it up later if you want instead of replacing it down the road.
You might still end up replacing it later.

I don't know much about these turbos so I am just looking at the number side.

Keep the set up as simple as possible.

The efr has a good rep but determine the boost level you are comfortable with. Going larger might be advisable for the 400 Mark.

The focus was producing how much wheel hp, on what dyno?  Quick spool and big power are hard to find in the same package.

the Focus hasnt been dyno'd its pretty much stock except for a cold air intake and catback exhaust. Im just going by manufacturers specs. They say its 250hp and 270lbs on 91octane.

I was thinking on using the 6758, plus other performance Mods to get around 400hp. My setup i currently have is supposed to do almost 300. FP big 28 in t25 casing, intercooler, boost controller, wastgate controller,3" full exhaust, and other mods. i was only running 10psi previous owner got it detuned for aircare. Now i may go with the 7064. I really want a fast spool though. Gonna run the 7 bolt till the crank goes for a walk

so the focus is probably making like 190ish hp wheel maybe on a mustang dyno?

I think the EFR series is too expensive for mild hp (under 500HP RG dyno)

Ask Lowell at RG for a hard hitting turbo package.

Buschur (one of the DSM gods) making 610ft torque @4700 rpm  with 609HP

Well I can vouch along with pretty much everyone else that has posted in this thread,  between 300awhp and 400awhp is a pretty deadly street setup.   These cars boogie down at that power level, and lag isnt a huge factor.

Im not sure what other parts you have planned to install before turning up the boost on a bigger turbo.
But there quite a few parts that go hand in hand when modifying these cars.
Ide recommend looking up an 'upgrade path' write up.
It will give you an idea of the key components that work well together and the problems that you can avoid.
337awhp.  ---> 500 awhp ? =)

Replacing parts since early 2010.

I'm going with .272 cams, a port and polish, maybe intake manifold and fuel parts.  What is really stumping me is the ECU.. And tuning and to get rid of that damn O2, censor (my downpipe I'm installing doesn't have a CAT or a place for the O2 censor) I'm not going too low budget on this build, so the EFR is where I'm going. Just want to do an easy build. The car is showing some future issues which are gonna get addressed also. Stupid transmission....

Yeah having the CEL turn on all the time throwing a p420 code is annoying.

I found a super cheap way to "fool" the rear o2 sensor into thinking there's a cat. I just got one dorman "help" spark plug de-foulers and drilled them out to accomidate the wider o2 sensor tip. Installed it into the stock location and wala! No more cel and p420!

But.... if you are going to be making 400 hp, your going to need engine management. either a eprom ecu socketed with dsm link/ tunerpro RT / werewolf/jackel,or get a 98-99 flushable ecu and use evo scan. Also obviously full stand alone like Aem ems will work as well. All these options will give u the ability to just disable the rear o2 monitoring and it won't set a CEL with no cat.
