Really high voltage!! HELP
« on: May 12, 2012, 11:03:09 pm »
My cars. Voltage began reading high all of a sudden driving 30 minutes then all of a sudden battery reads at around 16.5-17......

When I stop at a red light or stop sign the battery is around 14.5-15 if fans running @14 volts.
Then back to 17 once I began. Driving instantly.

What can cause this?
I know it would be dangerous to my on board computer at such high voltages.
what should I do?

Replace your alternator.  It has a regulator that has packed it in and you may damage your electronics and battery if you keep using it.

Yeah, sounds like a bad regulator in your alt. Happened with my Vette, replaced the alt and the battery as a precaution.

Then google.
Then read old postings about it.
Then ask.

Yes...the Big 3 is basically replacing all your power wires to and from your alt to the battery and chassis. Zero gauge is usually what you want to go with, but if you're taking this step, you may as well get a bigger alt while you're at it.

An alternative is to just get a second battery and relocate it to the back, close to your amplifier...then get a battery isolator. A batt isolator enables you to run two batteries...one for daily functions of the car, and the second dedicated to your sound system only. The cool thing is that your alt will constantly charge them both while you drive.

Personally, I don't think you need to worry about the big 3 Rohit, I'm running one 15" SPL sub with 5000watts going to it and all I run is an optima yellow top with zero gauge all around and a 5.2 farad capacitor.
